Joshua Matthews - I love the competition

Sunshine Coast Cricket Association | June 19, 2023

Joshua Matthews made his first grade debut for the Sunshine Coast Scorchers during the 2017/18 season.

An opening batsman with one first grade hundred to date, let’s find out some more about Josh's cricketing journey.

What year you were born?

1999

What is your nickname?

Morpheus or Morph

What was your most memorable moment in junior cricket?

I made 202 in an under 16 rep game, that would have to be it.

Tell us briefly about your cricketing journey?

I grew up in Hervey Bay, played senior cricket for the Caveliers up there when I was pretty young and then moved down to the Sunny Coast when I was 15 to play for the Nambour Cutters. Moved to the Scorchers when I was 18 and have played there since. Greatest achievement would be making my 1st grade debut for the Scorchers.

What is your pre match routine?

Depends how far I have to travel, I do enjoy a coffee somewhere if it doesn’t ruin too much of my sleep!

How do you amuse yourself on a plane flight?

I love listening to music and sleeping.

Which singer/band would you like to see perform live?

Not necessarily a band or singer, but I really want to go to Tomorrowland festival in Belgium.

What’s the one thing about you most people don’t know about?

I’m still a bit of a country boy at times.

Who has been your funniest team mate?

Nick Selman (Frankie), also doubles as angriest.

Who has been your most annoying team mate?

Hmm, Dan Cummins. Anyone who has played with or against will understand.

Who was your childhood hero?

Darren Lockyer

Who was your favourite all-time cricketer?

Ricky Ponting

Who is the fastest bowler you’ve played against?

Jack Prestwidge.

Who is the best spinner you’ve played against?

Matt Anderson, made me look like an absolute nuffy.

Who was the best batsman you played against?

Marnus Labuschagne, didn’t look like getting him out.

Who are the next two batsman to make their debut for the Queensland Bulls in Shield cricket?

Aryan Jain and I’d love to see Nick Selman Play in Aus.

What’s the best innings you’ve seen played in any game you’ve played throughout your playing days?

Joe Burns 200 at Norths. Hit the ball literally wherever he wanted. Was freakish.

Who are the two opponents in Premier Cricket you admire most in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

Andrew Gode and Scott Walter.

What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

I love competition, the opportunity that each week in cricket brings makes me excited.

What has been your most memorable moment in cricket?

Most memorable moment would actually be winning the Goodchild Shield in the Wide Bay when I was pretty young. Few bottles of passion pop on the way home from Bundaberg and off to school the next day.

What’s the best win you’ve been involved with?

Valleys in a 2 day game 2 seasons ago, won in the last few overs of the day.

What are the three things you’re looking forward to doing outside cricket?

More time for family and friends, developing work career and spending weekends away.
