Day Seven – 30 Oct 2023, Mon - Dharamshala | Amritsar

After a leisurely breakfast leave for Amritsar.

En route visit the Kangra Fort and Museum, possibly India’s oldest fort and the largest in the Himalayas. The fort resisted Akbar's siege in 1615. Akbar's son Jehangir successfully subdued the fort in 1620, forcing the submission of the Raja of Chamba, “the greatest of all the rajas in the region”.

Lunch at Kangra Fort Museum and travel 4 hrs. to Amritsar. On arrival check in at the hotel. Optional visit to the Golden temple to watch the wonderful ceremony of the Holy Book being put to bed for the night.

The city’s greatest highlight is the Golden Temple that attracts devotees from all over India and Sikhs from around the world. The vast kitchen and dining room are surely one of the world’s wonders in terms of feeding the multitudes.

Founded in 1577 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das, Amritsar is home to the spectacular Golden Temple, Sikhism's holiest shrine and one of India’s most serene and humbling sights. The same cannot be said for the hyperactive streets surrounding the temple, but they're a delight to walk through for a sensory overload of sights, sounds and smells. The legendary Golden Temple is actually just a small part of this huge gurdwara complex, known to Sikhs as Harmandir Sahib. Spiritually, the focus of attention is the tank that surrounds the gleaming central shrine – the Amrit Sarovar, from which Amritsar takes its name, excavated by the fourth Sikh guru, Ram Das, in 1577. Ringed by a marble walkway, the tank is said to have healing powers, and pilgrims come from across the world to bathe in its sacred waters.

Floating at the end of a long causeway, the Golden Temple is a mesmerising blend of Hindu and Islamic architectural styles, with an elegant marble lower level and above, a shimmering second level, encased in intricately engraved gold panels, and topped by a dome gilded with 750kg of gold.

At the southeast end of the Golden Temple Complex is the Guru-Ka-Langar, an enormous dining room where an estimated 100,000 pilgrims come to eat every day after praying at the Golden Temple. Manned by a battalion of volunteers this is one of the world’s most astounding dining sites. Catering equally to everyone from paupers to millionaires, it's a humbling demonstration of the Sikh principles of hospitality, community service and charity.

Dinner & overnight at Taj Swarna where a Luxury room has been reserved B L D

Day Eight – 31 Oct 2023, Tue - Amritsar | Jaipur

Breakfast at hotel.

Return visit to the Golden Temple - a hive of activity at any time of day or night with people praying, bathing, gathering in groups, preparing food. You also visit the Jalianwala Bagh & Partition Museum. The Partition Museum Project (TPMP) was inaugurated in October 2016 by The Arts and Cultural Heritage Trust (TAACHT) to work towards the establishment of a world class, physical museum, dedicated to the memory of the Partition of the sub-continent in 1947 — its victims, its survivors and its lasting legacy. In one of the greatest and most painful upheavals of contemporary history, over twenty million people migrated to a new homeland on the other side of a quickly demarcated border, leaving behind precious memories. Often, the journey and relocation was accompanied by traumatic events, and millions of men, women and children lost not just homes, but lives in the attempt to cross over. Perhaps the sacrifice of those millions was seen as a necessity for acquiring Independence, and so there has been, largely, a silence around the Partition.

Afternoon check out and transfer to Amritsar airport for flight to Jaipur via Delhi

Vistara at 1525 Hrs /1640 Hrs Connect to Alliance Air 1925 Hrs /2030 Hrs

Arrival transfer to hotel and rest of the day at leisure.

Overnight at Sawai Man Mahal where a palace room has been reserved B

This is a Taj hotel that celebrates the best of Rajputana heritage. Each of the aesthetically designed and spacious rooms/suites open into private courtyards laced with greenery. The palace’s façade is an ode to Amber Fort and also showcases the 187-year-old Golden Gate, Rambagh Palace’s original gold gilded entrance in the lobby.

Day Nine – 1 Nov 2023, Wed - Jaipur

After breakfast - A full day’s excursion will take in the ancient capital of Amer (Amber). The magnificent 16th C fort comprises an extensive palace complex, built from pale yellow and pink sandstone, and white marble, and is divided into four main sections, each with its own courtyard.

Later visit and the stepwell, Panna Meena ka Kund. After lunch at Samode Haveli, segue back to the heart of the Pink City visiting the City Palace and the UNESCO-listed Royal Observatory (Jantar Mantar).

The "Pink City" of Jaipur (pink only since it was painted in 1853 for a visit by Prince Albert) is a marvellous synthesis of Hindu, Jain and Mughal influenced architecture. All around the magnificent palaces and buildings are bazaars teeming with people, camels and horses. Shopping here is a lot of fun, and the jewellery particularly interesting.

This evening’s Dinner is at Villa Palladio – the gorgeous inspiration of Barbara Mioloni where the Med meets Mughal décor – in a wonderful garden setting.
