Q: Banter, gamesmanship, or the term we tend to be most familiar with ‘sledging’ is part of cricket.

The exchange of words can be funny, classy, clever and at times hard edged, but it should never cross the boundaries of being personal or abusive.

So, to our question, what’s the best “sledge” you’ve heard or heard about on the cricket field?
A: I nightwatched in a game Souths vs Toombul many many years ago - the Souths attack Balcam, Brabon, GS Chappell and co was pretty useful. I lasted till stumps then the next day decided that against this attack I wasnt going to stuff around. I got to 61 Fairly quickly (Lenny 'Chester' Balcam reminded me on a number of occasions that I couldnt bat or words to that effect) . I was then bounced by GS Chappell and whether it was a deliberate slower bouncer I dont know. However i was through my hook shot way early and the ball hit the back of the bat and lobbed through to Rod Rice the keeper (ex chairman of Qld State Selectors)). Greg as I walked past said 'on your way Nikko - I did you for pace - lack of it ! To get told where the dressing room was by one of the greats of World cricket was a highlight

Q: Who was the fielder with a direct hit, effected the run out of Ian Meckiff to produce the first tied test match in the history of test cricket. It was the first test of the 1960-61 series between Australia and West Indies in Brisbane?
A: Joe Solomon (RIP)
question
Q: Valley v University of Queensland First Grade Grand Final 1974-75

Left to right - Gill Chapman (12th man in final), Peter Nicholson, John Bourke, Peter Easton, Malcolm Francke (overseas for final), Geoff Trivett (now deceased – RIP), Keith Dudgeon (captain), Col Cooke (injured for final), Keith Ziebell, Lindsay Bell, Geoff Gray, Terry Khan, Peter Muspratt
Absent – Ross Wallace

I played for Valleys against University of Queensland in the 1974-75 Queensland Cricket Association First Grade Grand Final as a 19 year old, it was a 4 day game at the Gabba.

The University team were overwhelming favourites with a huge record during the season and had around 8 first class and international players. Valleys on the other hand had not won a premiership in 50 years.

Q: Who are the captains, coaches and leaders in cricket, sport, business or any field of life you admire and relate to most in terms of their achievements, respect and what they stand for?
If you’d like to mention why, please do.
A: Cricket Captain - Mike Lucas Norths Brisbane. Knew how to treat different people as to their strengths and weaknesses and tactically outstanding

Cricket Coach - Geoff Trivett Valleys Brisbane. Could tack a rag tag mob of kids, veterans and State players and bind them all together as one to win a premiership that only we believed could be done

Leader - Nelson Mandela, nuff said
question
Q: My best Grade Cricket team - Peter Nicholson, Brisbane and Sydney 1973 - 1993

The best grade team of players I played Grade cricket with in Brisbane and Sydney.

To paint the picture of the players I can choose from I made my debut for Norths in Brisbane in 1973/74 and transferred to Valley the next season where I played 1974/75 and 1975/76.

I then moved to Toombul for the 1976/77 season and played the 6 seasons before moving to Sydney to play for St George.

At St George I was the First Grade keeper in seasons 1982/83 and 83/84. I continued to play and filed in on occasions in Firsts and from 1990 – 1993 I enjoyed captaining the 3rd Grade team whilst perched at Short Leg.
