ON THIS DAY - 10th October

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | October 10, 2023

Some great early season form over the years, with five centuries and four century partnerships, with two of them grade partnership records!

In 1981, the odd couple, ROGER SATTLER (#378) and BRIAN MAIR (#307) added 101 for the 5th wicket for 1st grade v YCW. In 4th grade, JAMES CAMPBELL (#382) pictured, made his highest club score, with 154 v TAS. Still only a stippling, it was one of two hundreds for Waratahs. In 3rd grade, JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) The Rifleman, held 3 catches in an innings v St Kilda.

In 1987, BOB HUGHES (#511) and MICHAEL MULDOON (#192) added a grade record 92 for the 10th wicket v Easts. What were those two blokes doing int he tail!? In 3rd grade, BEDE RYAN (#503) made his first Waratahs ton, with 116 v Easts, adding a grade record 158 for the 5th wicket with KEVIN THEODORE (#550). Theodore's 82 was his Waratahs best. In 1st grade, GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) made his 12th century for Waratahs with 115 not out v Easts, adding 110 with PHIL MELVILLE (#542) for the 7th wicket. In 4th grade, DAVE ROBERTS (#484) held 5 catches in an innings v Easts, a rare feat for wicketkeepers with only four other blokes achieving the milestone.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
