ON THIS DAY - 11th October

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | October 11, 2023

Another day for the batsmen in Waratahs history.

In 1958, ALAN GRAY (#26) held 3 catches in an innings as A grade had a long day in the field v Uralla. In the same game, JEFF WALSH (#84), newly promoted after making 671 runs in B grade the previous season, got the flip side of cricket's ironies, making a pair.

In 1980, YCW took a pounding from the Waratahs Vets in A-Res grade. ALAN GRAY (#26) and BRIAN JOICE (#218) added 123 for the 2nd wicket and JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) and ALEC FINLAYSON (#340) added 110 for the 5th wicket in Waratahs 5-354. In B grade, on the same day, VICTOR CREW (#399) made 93 in Waratahs 241 v St Peters.

In 1986, GAVIN FINLAYSON (#516) set two grade partnership records in the one day (the only time it has been done) for 5th grade v Ex Services. With SIMON JOYCE (#512) he added 130 for the 4th wickets and then with MICHAEL HANDES (#518) he added 129 for the 6th wicket. Waratahs made 9-500, the highest team total by any Waratahs side in any grade. Joyce and Finlayson both made 118 and Handes would be not out over night on 96 ...only to be run out early on the second day - after skipper Ian Campbell held back a declaration - for 99. He waited all week. It would be his highest score for Waratahs.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
