ON THIS DAY - 21st October

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | October 21, 2023

Busy day in Waratahs history.

In 1961, D LANG (#138) scored 127 for A grade v Armidale Teachers College. He added 127 with JOHN FAILES (#107) for the 4th wicket. Failes made 27 of them. Lang was a superstar for a few seasons in the early 1960's, scoring five hundreds and averaging 57.26, marginally behind Stu McFarlan at the cusp of the 1990's. Their careers and stats are remarkably similar. Unfortunately, first name unknown. It seems he may have been a Uralla lad.

In 1967, BILL THOMPSON (#185) made 95 not out out of 5(dec) 254 for A grade v Churches. The circumstance of the declaration are unknown. Rain was involved but Waratahs batted first against a strong Churches bowling line up which was headed by Don Foster and Brian Joice.

In 1989, batting dominated. GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) pictured - made 116 for 2nd grade v Hillgrove but the century partnership for the innings was between JAMES CAMPBELL (#382) and BEDE RYAN (#503), who added 101 for the 2nd wicket. Waratahs made 9-318. In 1st grade, GRAHAM FROST (#333) and STU McFARLAN (#606) added 130 for the 2nd wicket v Hillgrove. 4th grade were rolled for just 87 but SYD PHILP (#269) carried his bat. Only eight players have done that for Waratahs: Syd did it twice! Churches batted first in the game. making 159, off which JASON FITTLER (#564) took 5-14 including the hat trick.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
