Waratahs Membership Registration
Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | November 25, 2023
The newly reborn Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale is making online registration available to anyone who was a player, a supporter, a friend or just an admirer of the club during its 57 year history from 1950 to 1956. Its a great way to stay in touch with team mates and former opponents and rekindle relationships we once valued.
At a recent gathering of the former players of Waratahs Cricket Club, it was determined that we reform the club as a social club to continue to maintain mateship among former players and supporters and to uphold the memory of what was a significant, highly active and successful member of the Armidale & District Cricket Association. Our players were among the best to play in and emerge from Armidale. Our performances created legends. Our history and statistical database are as good as any club in Australia.
Let's be clear. There is no intention for Waratahs to return to the field in any regular competitions. It will be a social club with the purpose of staying in touch with each other through online media, social gatherings, gold days, Test match attendance. As we age, staying in touch is even more important. Remembering who we were is a good thing but being who we are now is the real trick and sharing that with mates with a common love of the game and the Waratahs club could be a cornerstone to a better way to gracefully accept the passing years.
By registering, you allow communication to be so much easier. There are no fees, no ongoing renewal requirements. The only time you have to re-new is if your details change.
Andrew "Father" Davis has agreed to lead the new club. The word "Father" was a term of endearment and recognition which originated with one of Waratahs greatest sons, Graham Johnson and its a more fitting term for the "new" club than President.
Who can join?
Former players, it goes without need for mention, are most welcome and they will be the only ones to obtain a membership number - their assigned player number, no less. However, any friend of Waratahs, from former opponents, supporters, family members ... all are welcome to be involved in the social life of this new entity. At the recent reunion, it was great to see Nobby Baillie, Mike and Rick Porter (Easts) and Geoff Wood (Uralla & Hillgrove) there to share in the stories and where their lives are at.
In essence, this move to keep Waratahs alive with the smallest amount of formality, will continue what a small group has been doing for the last twenty years and it makes more sense and is far more appealing than just touching base at funerals. There has to be more to the strength of relationships we shared back then than eulogies.
