ON THIS DAY - 1st December

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 01, 2023

As cricket turns it mind to Christmas, Waratahs batsmen clearly got a move on on the 1st December.

In 1962, ALLAN COX (#160) and ALAN GRAY (#26) added 124 for the 1st wicket in A grade's win over Ex Services, despite a Wally Miller hundred.

In the other A grade match, RAY REEVES (#143) and LAURIE BLAKE (#126) added 101 for the 2nd wicket v Churches. What? Two Waratahs A grade sides? By December of the 1962-63 season, University, who had nominated two A grade sides, was struggling to field both teams, so dropped their second team out of competition. Rather than have a bye, Waratahs A-Res side, which was leading their competition was promoted. They took none of their competition points with them. Both Waratahs sides struggled and didn't make the semis. Of course, things were different for University, who went on to be Premiers in A grade!

In 1973, ALLAN THOMPSON (#238) and GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) added 135 unbeaten for the 6th wicket for A grade v Unicorns after Waratahs were 5-37 trying to set up an outright after a first innings collapse.

in 1979, BRUCE HENDERSON (#376) scored a bowling century 4-114 for A-Res grade as Hillgrove rattled up 7-334 on the back of G Edey' 153 not out.

In 1984, VICTOR CREW (#399) and TIM MULDOON (#296) added 110 for the 3rd wicket as 1st grade made 249 v Hillgrove. Geoff Wood took 7-69 forthe 'grovers.

JACK TRESTRAIL (#303) made 128 as 2nd's made 8-400 v TAS. Late in the innings, ROGER HAY (#427) and DAVID TILBURY (#302) added a grade record 110 unbeaten for the 9th wicket before the declaration.

In 1990, STU McFARLAN (#606) made 129 not out for 1st grade v Centrals. He added 116 for the 2nd wicket with MARK DYMOCK (#523) as Waratahs won in a canter chasing 256. Michael Jones, soon to join Waratahs, made 70 for Centrals.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
