Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 02, 2023

Waratahs Cricket Club of Armidale is a club which always prided itself on its history and not just the tales passed on down by generations of players. It also has one of the best recorded databases of its individual players, scoresheets and records of any club, at any level of cricket in Australia.

For a club that hasn't played a game since 2010, its remarkable how dynamic those stats are. For instance, in the past month, another 81 names have been added to the database and about 35 others have had their records updated as new information came to light from missing Yearbooks from the Years 1997-2006. The Waratahs Yearbook was always the envy of other clubs. Starting in 1972, they provide a record of stats for each season and a continuously developing record of player performances. For the twenty one previous seasons, stats were obtained from microfiche film files of the Armidale Express held at the University of New England. It took about 15 years to gather and create the database into its present form.

Follow the links here to discover more about the deeds of the 848 players - male and female - who played for Waratahs from that first season of 1950-51 until the last game, played at a reunion event, in 2010. The Individual Player Records provide a detailed breakdown, by grade, of the batting, bowling and fielding achievements of every one of those 848 individual, plus reveals their player number. Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
