ON THIS DAY - 3rd December

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 03, 2023

In 1960, the man they called Tall Tony, TONY MORRISS (#78) took 10-96 (8-52 & 2-44) for A-Res grade v Hillgrove. The man was a legend of the lower grades, taking 305 wickets for the club. His 179 wickets in B/4th grade are easily the most ever.

In 1977, SYD PHILP (#269) made 104 for B grade v Ex Services.

Waratahs 312 (Syd Philp 104, Lyndon Strong 77, John Baillie 41. P Merrick 6-104); Ex Services 179 (D McCann 83. David Wheaton 5-28) and 66 (Peter Baillie 4-20, David Wheaton 4-26)

In 1988, wicketkeeper Matt Campbell (#363) held 3 catches in an innings for 3rd grade v Centrals

In 1994, a nice father and son moment for ROGER ROAN (#176) and MICHAEL ROAN (#836-pictured) when they added 125 for the 2nd wicket in a one day game for 5th grade v Norths/St Peters. Even more special as the veteran Roger went on to 127, not only his only Waratahs hundred but the only one in a continuous cricketing career in Armidale that spanned back more than 30 years.

On the same day in 4th grade, JOE CAIRNS (#726) made his only Waratahs hundred, 132 not out v Norths/St Peters.

Up in 2nd grade, MATT PINE (#621) was stranded on 98 not out when Waratahs forty overs were up against Uralla. His 4-19 got his side back in the game late in Uralla's victory.

In 2005, STUART McCLINTOCK (#870)* made 106x for 3rd grade v Uralla: the last Waratahs hundred, number 196. The first was scored by FRED SKILLICORN (#31) for A grade v Wests, fifty two years earlier.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
