ON THIS DAY - 6th December

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | December 06, 2023

In 1958, another tour de force from TONY MORRISS (#78) as he repeated the dose from the first day on the second against Armidale Teachers College in B grade. HIs match figures of 11-63 (5-20 & 6-43) came just three games after he did the same to TAS. In a game where no side reached triple figures, he was the difference.

In 1969, GREG RUSSELL (#131) became the four player on a list with only six on it, to score fifty or more in both innings of a match, with 65 and 76 not out v St Peters in A-Res grade.

Players Scoring >50 in Both Innings

In 1975, BRIAN MAIR (#307) took a career best 7-52 for A-Res grade v Churches.

In 1986, BRIAN RHODES (#525) played one of the most remarkable innings of all time. Coming in at 3-21, as first grade wickets fell like flies in a mist of Mortein, Rhodes made 128 as Waratahs struggled to 168. At 76.19%, it the highest percentage of the score by one batsmen of any completed innings. Mike Connolly was second top score with 10 as Snorkel Nosworthy and Wally Sattler cut a swath through the Royal Blues. He had partnerships of 26 with Graham Johnson (6), 36 with Mark Dymock (5), and 40 with Wes Davis (1).

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
