ON THIS DAY - 29th January

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | January 29, 2024

In 1966, GREG RUSSELL (#131) scored 112 not out for A-Res grade v Ex Services, the first of five hundreds he would score in five seasons until his eventual elevation to A grade. His playing record across 10 seasons with the club is amongst the best. 2,919 runs@33, with the majority of them in A-Res during his long wait until elevation, where his 2,153 runs@52 are beaten only Keith McIntyre and Graham Johnson. He was also a handy bowler with 58 wickets@15, 18 of those in A grade. When his A grade results didn't mirror his success in the lower grade, he eventually went to Ex Services, where in his first game, he top scored and took a 5fa ... against Waratahs A grade.

A-Res v Ex Services - A-Res grade, 22nd & 29th January 1966

Waratahs 135 (Keith McIntyre 39, Keith Dawson 27, John Russell 21) and 258 (Greg Russell 112x, Keith McIntyre 30, Col Marshall 28, Max Schaefer 26); Ex Services 214 (Richie Clutterbuck 50. John Russell 4-18)

In 2000, ALBERT HOFKAMP (#476) held 3 catches in an innings for 3rd grade v Norths, all of them off son Carl! Bert was a super fieldsman, holding 227 catches in his 21 seasons with the club, six times catching three or more in an innings. Towards the tail end of his career, he had four seasons as a wicketkeeper, in which he made 67 dismissals (63 catches/4 stumpings).

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
