ON THIS DAY - 25th February

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | February 28, 2024

In 1967, in the days before finals series being played over the one weekend, A grade won their semi-final, the pace attack making short work of University and then the batting staggering to a win, being six down when they passed University's moderate 100.

Waratahs were surprise winners over the highly fancied minor premiers St Peters in the A-Res grade semi-final, defending only 99 thanks to sharp fielding and excellent bowling from Marshall and Lucas.

Waratahs 99 (Keith McIntyre 24. B Hardy 5-23); St Peters 61 (Col Marshall 5-43, K Lucas 4-3).

In 1978, GRAHAM JOHNSON (#207) made his highest score for Waratahs, making 163 not out as A grade won a memorable match against Easts. Coming to the wicket at 3-11, he dominated the rest of the afternoon, scoring 66% of the runs as wickets continued to fall, until BRIAN MAIR (#307) joined him at 6-134 chasing Easts 199. The pair added 124 unbeaten for the 7th wicket and put Easts to bed. Opposition opener Ray Eddie would continue to describe it as the greatest innings he ever saw.

In 1995, PHIL REES (#636) and DANIEL EVANS (#632) added 148 unbeaten for 5th grade for the 2nd wicket as Waratahs raced to a declaration on the first day, after ROGER ROAN (#176) had demolished Norths, taking a career best 7-12 with his offies. Evans made 67 not out and added another 45 not out in the second as Waratahs made easy work of chasing the outright points. Norths lost 20 wickets to Waratahs 3 in the match.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
