ON THIS DAY - 1st March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 01, 2024

In 1958, JEFF WALSH (#84) made a dashing hundred, scoring 109 not out and adding a grade record 180 unbeaten with JOHN McINTYRE (#99 - pictured) for the 3rd wicket v de la Salle College. It was Walsh's best year with the club, in career that would end in reasonable results in A grade. In this year he made 671 runs @44.7, held 12 catches and took 61 wickets @7.5

Not to be outdone, TONY MORRISS (#78) did the hat trick!

In 1969, KEITH McINTYRE (#129) finally cracked it for a hundred, after four times being out in the 90's. Not content with his 101 not out in the first innings for A-Res grade v Armidale Teachers College, he made 52 retired in the second, becoming the second of six players to make fifty or more in both innings of a match.

A-Res v Teachers - 22nd February & 1st March 1969

Waratahs 265 (Keith McIntyre 101x, J McCann 66, Allan Smith 54. G Wilkin 5-83) and 6-150 (Keith McIntyre 52ret, Garry O'Halloran 22x, Col Marshall 21ret); Teachers 244 (Brian Preen 133x. Col Marshall 4-45)

In 1980, openers CHRISTIAN QUAIFE (#372) and MARK O'SHEA (#369) added 129 for the 1st wicket for B grade v Centrals. (detailed scorecard unavailable)

In 1986, TIM MULDOON (#296) made 56% of 1st grade's 176 v Hillgrove but was caught behind off Tony Coelli one run short of his hundred. No one else in the top six made double figures and it was only his 76 run partnership with Mark Hemmy that saved Waratahs, after being 6-67.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
