ON THIS DAY - 7th March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 07, 2024

In 1970, BRENDAN McGEE (#200) made 102 not out as A-Res made 8-328 v Armidale Teachers College, with six players making good runs. The win relegated Teachers to 4th and a place in the semi against ... Waratahs.

A-Res v Teachers - 28th February & 7th March 1970

Teachers 131 (F Campbell 50. John Russell 6-53); Waratahs 8-328 (Brendan McGee 102x, J McCann 46ret, Keith McIntyre 43, Bob Brennan 35, Paul Muldoon 30ret, R Frith 23ret)

In 1981, ANDREW DAVIS (#354) and PAUL BROCK (#391) added 119 for the 4th wicket for A-Res grade v St Peters. Davo's 89 was his top score for Waratahs. IN B grade, WARREN ALLEN (#360) and TONY PATTISON (#383) added 100 for the 7th wicket v O'Connor. Paul Ryan is notable in the scorecard, not so much for half century on the second day but for opening the bowling!

In 1987, TIM SQUIRE (#528) and PAUL WISEMANTLE (#529) added a grade record 106 for the 6th wicket for 3rd grade v St Peters. Tim's 47 was his highest Waratahs score.

In 1992, PAUL ZAGAMI (#624) bagged a pair for 4th grade v St Peters. Check out the scorecard, particularly St Peters #8 & 9. That must have been a big stand!

In 1998, Waratahs played its last game in 1st grade, having missed only two seasons in 47 years. As was the case for most of the second half of the season, they played short - through no fault of their own - with a very inexperienced team at that level and were comprehensively beaten by Uralla.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
