ON THIS DAY - 17th March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 17, 2024

In 1962, J BOUNDY (#118), a more than useful allrounder, made a pair for A-Res grade v Hillgrove.

In 1990, it was the tale of three bowlers: PHIL MELVILLE (#542) grabbed a second innings wicket, giving him 10-19 (9-14 & 1-5) as 1st grade had batting practice on the second day against Uralla, winning by a mere 287 runs. MICHAEL CONNOLLY (#293) made 116 not out, adding 101 with DANIEL RYAN (#514) for the 3rd wicket.

2nds beat Centrals by an innings, with BOB HUGHES (#511 - pictured) claiming a hat trick in his Waratahs career best of 6-31.

Not so rosy for 5th grade, who conceded a record 445 v Hillgrove, with skipper TONY BENNETT (#355) grabbing a second career bowler's hundred with 2-128.

In 1991, two semi-finals were completed. In 1sts, Waratahs just prevailed over Ex Services in a tough battle. On the first day, former 'Tah, Greg Johnson, held Servies together with a patient 88 and all the Waratahs bowlers kept things below three an over all afternoon. Shamus O'Brien got late wickets and the best of the figures. Steve Hadfield and James Campbell started with 82 before Thompson got them both and when the "gun", Stu McFarlan, failed to fire, the wobbly boot set in. Daniel Ryan batted with caution but Ex Services kept chipping away until at 7-176, Waratahs were on the brink. Enter Shamus Robertson, who swung the match in the same way he swung the bat, hitting lustily in an unbeaten partnership with Troy Maguire of 48.

4th grade lost their semi-final to Wollomombi but no scores are available from the match.

In 1996, 2nd grade beat Hillgrove in the semis, on the back of two fine performances. Skipper and club President ANDREW WILLIS (#675) made 103, opening the batting, with Kingsley Chapman and Grant Harlow boosting Waratahs to a big total. MATT GRIFFITH (#717) turned in his best Waratahs performance with the ball, claiming 7-57 of 22 overs unchanged overs.

5th grade beat Uralla in their semi nut unfortunately, no scorecard is available from the match. We do know that STEVEN DAVIS (#751) cleaned up Uralla, taking 8-60.

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
