ON THIS DAY - 27th March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 27, 2024

In 1960, Waratahs A grade lost in the semis to Bruce Kellaway, when he scored 75 and took 7-70 for Uralla. Uralla posted a good first day score with Taylor - as usual - playing his part, adding 72 with Kellaway for the 2nd wicket after a bad start. Uralla's middle order left quickly and at 5-81, Waratahs quality bowling attack was well on top but Kellaway found support in the lower order. Gray and Ferris made a strong response before stumps but Gray's run out early on the second day heralded a similar middle order slump and at 5-85, Waratahs reverted to their second option of batting out the day to qualify for the final. With half an hour to go and only seven down, this looked the likely outcome, until the irrepressible Kellaway conjured some magic to dismiss Lemon. Releasing his delivery when level with the umpire, from well behind the bowling crease, Kellaway bamboozled the resolute Lemon and bowled him. Gordon Lee had a wild swing at a Taylor full toss which hit near the top of middle and when the ultra defensive Failes mistimed a rare attacking shot, looking to retain the strike, he holed out to Cooper and the semi was lost.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
