ON THIS DAY - 31st March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 31, 2024

In 1962, the two Waratahs teams had mixed fates. A grade lost their semi-final after University's batsmen put on a solid display, always managing to launch innings rescues just when Waratahs looked to be gaining the ascendency. The turning point came at 6-136, when Gill and Meyers came together and saw out the first safely with an unbroken 76 runs until stumps. Mackenzie and Smith wrapped things up quickly on the second day but the damage was done. Hussey and Duloy swept the top order aside and at 4-10 and then 8-84, the batting was a disaster. Mackenzie and Smith restored home to the side, adding 77 for the 9th wicket but the long shot hope of survival, egged on by an approaching storm, ended when Mackenzie was lbw. His 50 was his highest career score for Waratahs.

It was a different story in B grade, where Waratahs were content to bat out the second day and qualify for the Final with a draw. Dumaresq had batted well on the first day, with seven of their top eight making starts and a competitive total posted. The second day started with a clatter of early wickets but Hooper and McClenaghan arrested the slide and then Barrett refused to budge, keeping things intact until the storm came just after tea and secured the draw.

The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
