ON THIS DAY - 14th November

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | October 30, 2024

In 1953, A grade featured two century partnerships in the one innings against Uralla - a rare even. Even rarer, it was two different pairs. First Fred Skillicorn (#31) and Ross Ridley (#8) added 102 for the 5th and then Don Paul (#37) and Bob Howe (#36) added 100 for the 7th wicket. Don Paul took 7 wickets for the match as Waratahs won outright by 7 wickets.

In 1981, TIM BINDLEY (#393) held 4 catches for 4th grade v Uralla, a rarish event for a non-wicketkeeper.

In 1987, PETER MURPHY (#535) recorded his best match figures for Waratahs, taking 11-44 (7-19 & 4-25) as 2nd grade gave St Peters a fearful hiding.

In 3rd grade, wicketkeeper MARTIN CAMPBELL (#490) held 3 catches in an innings v Uni Vets. He went on to the Best Performances in a Match list with 88 & 19 and 4 dismissals for the match.

In 1992, TIM QUINLAN (#659) and NORMAN SWARTZ (#569) added an all grades club record 112 unbeaten for the 8th wicket for 2nd grade v Ex Services. MARK TANNER (#573) had earlier clubbed 93, his highest Waratahs score and with father Frank on the receiving end in the Ex Services attack. Ian Munday and Roger Roan also made half centuries in Waratahs 7-386.

In 5th grade, CRAIG BLAKE (#671) made the highest 5th grade score, 150 v St Peters. It was his second hundred in three weeks in his first season for Waratahs. No scoresheet available unfortunately.

Armidale, Australia
The history of a proud club which grew men from boys through the simple act of trusting them with something very precious.

Favourite players: Life members: Alan Gray, Harry Deiderick, Graham Johnson, Ian Campbell, Syd Philp, Graham Patterson & Albert Hofkamp.

Favourite grounds: Wicklow Oval (Rologas Fields), Harris Park, West Armidale Park (Lambert Park), The Armidale Sportsground

All-time cricket hero: Any bloke in the Royal Blue cap.

Favourite bat: The one that scored the most.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
