SEMI FINALS ON THIS DAY - 14th March

Armidale Waratahs (The Tahs) | March 14, 2025

In 1993, 4th grade beat Easts in the minor semi. Andrew Willis and Daniel Evans added 61 for the second wicket after an early wicket fell but when they were parted four quick wickets had Waratahs in strife at 5-85. Michael Roan (pictured) rose to the occasion with a swashbuckling 65 and with the support of Tony Yeomans and Craig Suter and eventual total of 222 was handy. Easts were never really in the game on the Sunday, with wickets falling regularly. Yeomans held 3 catches in the innings, as Tim Hadfield, Suter and Martin Lawrence bowled all but 4 of the 46 overs need for Waratahs to win.

In 1999, Waratahs 4th grade applied the strangle hold to Hillgrove who took 55 overs to make 79 on the first day. All seven bowlers bowled well, not allowing the batsmen to get the ball off the square. Wicketkeeper DAVID DUNLOP (#757) grabbed four dismissals, including stumping the opener off fast man Steve Gadd. There were wobbles before stumps with Waratahs reply at 3-14 and an early wicket on the Sunday but Steve Gadd led the way and then the second half of the order enjoyed some batting practice. Of special note was 22 not out from the veteran, Wes Davis.

In 2004, 3rd grade beat Uralla outright in the minor semi final. No scorecards are available but Uralla made 72, with MICHAEL McCULLOCH (#830) taking 7-31. Waratahs replied with 236 and on the Sunday, Uralla were routed for 36 in their second innings.

Most memorable moment in cricket:
1952-53 A grade Final, beating Easts 2 outright after our worst A/1st grade total in the sixty year history of the club. Beat the very strong Uralla in the last round to just scrape into the semis and then Easts 1 in the Semi. Played one player short on the first day after a mix up with team sheets and made 163 in the sunshine, Ross Ridley 59. Easts 0-57 at stumps after four dropped catches. Didn't play the second day for two weeks because of the Armidale Show and then after four days of heavy rain. Wicket now a sticky and impossible to bat on. Easts all out for 95, Don Paul 6-24. Batting a second time, Waratahs still one short and Ridley now out injured, all out for 21. Easts needing 90 don't make it to halfway, all out for 43, Don Paul 7-20. Waratahs win their first premiership in only their third season.
