Cricket Ipswich Hornets | September 22, 2023

Harry Austin is Ipswich first grade player number 55 and he scored his maiden first grade century for Ipswich against Sandgate Redcliffe on 16 January 2022.

Chasing Sandgate Redcliffe first innings total of 302, Harry hit 10 fours and 3 sixes on his way to 100 not out to lead Ipswich to victory by 2 wickets.

Here’s our quick pocket profile with Harry Austin.

What year were you born?

2001

Tell us about your cricket journey?

Started my junior cricket at Wests before moving to Souths for the start of my senior cricket and now play at Ipswich where I have played the last 4 seasons.

If you can share with our readers how you would describe yourself as a cricketer?

Right hand top order batsman and net bowling specialist

What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

The thing I enjoy most about playing cricket is winning with my mates. It's pretty hard to beat the feeling of getting over the line in a tight game and having some of your best mates there to enjoy it with.

What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket so far?

Probably making my maiden first grade 100 in a tight run chase at Sandgate a few years ago

Who’s your favourite all-time cricketer?

Ricky Ponting

Who is the fastest bowler you’ve played against?

I faced Mark Steketee in a one-day quarter final a few years back and he was pretty sharp

Who is the best spinner you’ve played against?

Mitch Swepson or Matt Kuhnemann spring to mind

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

Hard to say and I might be a bit biased but my good mate Harry Wood got a 200 last season against Toombul. The pitch was green and offering lots of pace and bounce along with some sideways movement. Harry came in when we were in a bit of trouble and managed to get to 100 and then dominated from then on against a quality attack that tried everything against him.

Who is the best wicket keeper you’ve had the good fortune to play with?

Jake Cross, average chat, and elite bench press

Llewellyn Motors are proud sponsors of Cricket Ipswich

Who are the two players you’ve come to admire most in your club in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

Harry Wood for skill. The bloke does it all

For competitive spirit I’d have to say Bryn Llewellyn. I've yet to play with someone who is more competitive than him.

What are the two attributes you like to see in a captain and leader?

Someone who is calm and leads by example.

Which singer/band would you like to see perform live?

Sam Fender would be cool or if I was feeling something a bit more upbeat probably Fred again.

Who’s the king of selfies at your club?

Jack Wood without a doubt. Don’t think the bloke owns a shirt.

Favourite city in the world to visit?

Went to Paris over the winter that was cool.

Who’s been the biggest influence on your career so far?

My dad without a doubt. He’s thrown me so many balls I’d hate to know what sort of nick his shoulder is in.

Where do you find inspiration that gets you through challenging times?

It sounds cliché but close friends and family always seem to give me a different perspective on things that help me to push through the hard times.

Who are the three people in the world you’d love to meet and talk to?

Michael Jordan, the author Mark Manson and Joe Rogan

Mark Manson

What do you like to do to relax outside cricket?

To relax I like to hang out with mates, play golf and do some form of exercise. I also have my studies that gives me another thing to take my attention away from cricket.

Do you work or go to university?

Currently studying a Bachelor of property economics at QUT and working part time

Do you have a favourite quote?

“You can’t saw like an eagle when you surround yourself with turkeys”.

Can we ask, what would it mean to you to play first class cricket and for your country?

It would be great to play at a higher level but if it never happens, I'm happy with that too. I play cricket to enjoy it and hopefully make some great memories along the way. If I can sit back at end of my playing days and say that I gave myself the best opportunity to be the best player I could be than I’ll be happy.
