question
Q: Vale Frank Misson 1938-2024

The NSW cricket community is saddened by the passing this week of former Blues (cap #511) and Australian Test (cap #217) player Frank Misson, aged 85.

Born in Darlinghurst in Sydney, Misson was inspired to become a fast bowler after watching the great Ray Lindwell in 1950. As he grew through his teens he became a stellar athlete, going on to train as a runner in Portsea with legendary coach Percy Cerutty, whose influence rubbed off on Misson, leading to a fascination with health and fitness that was ahead of his time.

At just twenty years of age when he made his First-Class debut in the last Sheffield Shield match of the 1958/59 season, Misson took 3/31 and 3/64 and New South Wales won by an innings and 103 runs and retained the Shield.

By the end of 1959/60, Misson had won a place in an Australian second XI that toured New Zealand. In three matches against New Zealand, he took 17 wickets at 12.47, leading to higher honours.

In 1960/61, the West Indies toured Australia and Misson made his Test debut in the Second Test, replacing an injured Ian Meckiff. Misson took a wicket with his second ball, and with Meckiff back for the Third Test, Misson carried the drinks. Meckiff missed the last two Tests and Misson was used again.

On the 1961 Ashes Tour, Misson played in the first Two Tests, but an Achilles injury thereafter limited his use, both on the tour and in the rest of his career. He took 16 wickets at 38.50 in his five Tests with a best of 4-58.

His First-Class career ended in 1963/64 with 177 wickets at 31.13 in 71 matches. Of those, 42 were for New South Wales, and in those he took 85 wickets at 37.72.

Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon said Misson’s passing would be felt by the cricket community.

“We pass on our sincerest condolences to Frank’s family and friends, especially all of those that played with him as part of the NSW Men’s Team and the Australian Men’s Team,” Germon said.

“Frank’s career was cut short by injury, which was ironic considering the focus he had on health, diet and fitness in an era where sports science was not very prevalent.

“His five Test caps are recognition of his talent and determination and there is little doubt that if it wasn’t for injury he would have played many more times for his state and country.”

Coaches scoring centuries, undefeated teams and the talent of tomorrow!

First ball – Zero to hero!

St George-Sutherland Brewer Shield captain, Lucia Martin, was dismissed for a second-ball duck against Gordon at Killara Park. Her side would set a seemingly surmountable 85-run target for the Deers.

Q: On November 3, 2023, community cricketer Paul Compton reached a rare – maybe even unique - milestone in Australian cricket. Compton who plays for De La Salle Kingsgrove Cricket Club (DLSKCC) in Sydney’s Southern suburbs, took his 1000th wicket in Australian Club cricket.

Compton is 60 years old and this milestone has been a long time coming. He picked up the bat for his club as early as 10 and went through the entire club cricket pathway to start playing senior cricket around 1983. His 1000 wickets have come off the last 40 years of bowling right arm medium outswingers to his opponents.

Q: In the beautiful suburb of Hornsby Heights, Friday evenings at Montview Oval turn into a carnival-like atmosphere. There’s music, dancing and lots of cricket, played by girls who just can’t have enough fun.

Montview Oval is equipped to run two cricket matches next to each other, and come Friday this season, Stage 1 girl players (8-12 years-old) who have, until now, mostly played Cricket Blast, or haven’t played cricket at all, gather in the afternoon sun to play against each other’s teams.

This is a celebration of girls’ cricket all the way. The ball is pink, the kit is colourful, and no one needs to wear white unless they choose to. There’s music playing on a boom box and the girls are dancing with their bats, inventing cricketing moves and perfecting their legwork all in one. A few pink hoodie-wearing fielders are around the field, ready for a catch, or to stop that opening batter’s boundary attempt.

It was eight years in the making, but Cricket NSW’s (CNSW) and Central Coast Cricket Association’s (CCCA) bid to have female only teams in every club at all community-based levels of the game has finally been a success.

Q: The cricket family and wider community is saddened by the passing overnight of former Cricket NSW chairman and Life Member Dr Gorur ‘Harry’ Harinath OAM.

Dr Harinath came to Australia from Hyderabad in 1971 and began work at the Mercy Hospital in Tasmania with barely a dollar to his name, before forging a highly successful medical career and making a seismic contribution to cricket.

After a year in the Apple Isle, Harinath built a friendship with former Pakistani batsman Sadiq Mohammad and was recruited to play for his cricket team, thus beginning a five-decade long connection to the game in this country.

In 1977, Dr Harinath joined Balmain Cricket Club (now Sydney Cricket Club) as their team doctor at the invitation of then Australian Cricket Board chairman Fred Bennett. It wasn’t long before Dr Harinath's passion and administrative skills led to him to the club’s presidency - a role he held for more than 30 years.

Q: Six NSW rising stars have been named in a 16-player Australian squad to tour England for a multi-format Under-19 series, which starts in August.

The Youth Selection Panel has selected Cameron Frendo, Ryan Hicks, Sam Konstas, Rafael MacMillan, Harjas Singh and Tom Straker, following training camps in Brisbane and Sri Lanka, where they will return for the 2024 ICC Under-19 Men’s Cricket World Cup.

Singh and Straker will make their second appearance in the gold and green colours this year. The pair were members of an Australian U19 squad that secured a series victory against a touring England U/19 team in January and February.

Hicks, Konstas and MacMillan are set to further progress through the national pathway system, building on their previous success of winning the U19 National Championship title in a dominant NSW Metropolitan side.

Q: Vale Hedley 'Brian' Taber 29 April 1940 - 21 July 2023

Cricket NSW is deeply saddened by the passing yesterday of former Australian and NSW wicketkeeper Brian Taber. He was 83.

Born in Wagga Wagga and raised in Wollongong, Taber played his entire career with the Gordon club.

He made his first-class debut wearing cap number 526 for NSW in the 1964/65 season and went on to play 129 first-class matches prior to his retirement in 1973/74.

Taber also captained NSW on a number of occasions between 1968/69 and 1972/73.

While he scored one first-class ton and eight half centuries, it was Taber’s wicketkeeping aplomb that he was known for.

Safe and calm under pressure, Taber was considered one of Australia’s greatest ever ‘keepers. He made his Test debut behind the stumps for Australia (cap 240) against South Africa in Johannesburg on December 23, 1966, finishing the match with seven catches and a stumping.

In all, Taber represented Australia on 16 occasions between 1966 and 1970, snaring 56 catches and making four stumpings. He also scored 353 runs at a tick over 16.

Following the completion of his playing career, Taber continued his passionate association with cricket, holding several coaching and managerial roles. He managed the Australian Under 19 men’s team on several occasions and the winner of the Player of the Tournament award at the National U/19 Championships is now awarded the Brian Taber Medal.

Known as ‘Tabsy’ or ‘Herbie’, Taber coached NSW and was a Blues selector for 24 years through the 1990’s and 2000’s, many as the chairman of selectors.

Taber was made a Life Member of CNSW in 1979 and inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2021.

Cricket NSW CEO Lee Germon called Taber ‘one of the most popular NSW and Australian players ever’,

“We are devastated by the passing of Brian Taber and send our condolences to his family and friends,” Germon said.

“His contribution to Australian cricket was immense, as a player, coach, manager and selector.

“Tabsy was universally loved for both his skill as a wicketkeeper and his character as a person.

“He was such a nice, genuine guy and he will be greatly missed by all.”

Q: Jason Arnberger goes big with 319 for NSW 2ndXI against NSW Country in December 1995

Jason Arnberger was a Penrith junior and played Sydney Grade Cricket for Penrith so it was Arnie’s home ground when he scored 319 not out against NSW Country.

Jason made his debut for NSW during the 1994/95 and he moved to Victoria at the start of the 1997/98 season. He played his last first class game for Victoria against Queensland in March 2006.

In a first class career spanning 1994/95 to 2005/06 Jason Arnberger played 88 first class games and in 165 innings scored 6,049 runs at an average of 39.79.

He scored 13 first class centuries and 32 half centuries and took 58 catches.

Jason was awarded Victoria’s State Player of the year in 2005/06 and it was an unfortunate back injury that kept him out of the 2006/07 season and ultimately the end of his distinguished first class career.

question
Q: Jenny Gunn appointed assistant coach of NSW Breakers

The NSW Breakers have received a massive boost as they return to training with the appointment of English great Jenny Gunn MBE as an assistant coach for the upcoming season.

Gunn joins a Breakers performance staff that is led by head coach Gavan Twining and consists of assistant coach Grant Lambert, analyst Benji Hoppitt, strength and conditioning expert Sean Hardy and long-time physio Katie Ryan.

The 36-year-old will also work closely with Cricket NSW’s Pathway coaches Sarah Aley and Hannah Trethewy to help develop the next generation of Breakers.

Gunn played 259 matches for England across three formats between 2004 and her international retirement in October 2019, and is widely considered one of the greatest all-rounders of all-time. During the 2018 Women's T20I Tri Nations Series in India, the medium pacer and batter became the first cricketer, male or female, to play in 100 T20 International matches.

Gunn said she was looking forward to reconnecting with the Breakers and helping drive personal development amongst the playing group.

“I did some coaching career development with the Breakers before the pandemic and so I am familiar with most of the players in the system,” Gunn said.

“This is something that will certainly help with the transition into this role, and I’m excited to see how far the players have progressed over the last few years.

“I’m also keen to assist with their development throughout the season to help each of them reach their potential.”

Cricket NSW Head of Elite Female Cricket, Leah Poulton, said the triple world cup winner would bring a wealth of experience and knowledge to the role.

“We are very excited and grateful that we have been able to bring Jenny out to work with Cricket NSW and the Breakers,” Poulton said.

“She was one of the world’s best players throughout her career and has a great way of being able to communicate what she has learnt and experienced to the players.

“Jenny is also really good at identifying and developing young players and will help with the transition of players from the Pathway level to the elite senior level.”

The Breakers began pre-season training this week, while captain Alyssa Healy, Ash Gardner, Phoebe Litchfield, Maitlan Brown, Lauren Cheatle and Tahlia Wilson will return to the NSW set up after they return from international duties in the UK.

question
Q: Cricket fans can now be part an exciting intersection between history and the future at the home of Cricket NSW, Cricket Central.
The Cricket NSW Foundation has launched a Purchase a Picket campaign, giving fans, cricket clubs or businesses the opportunity to make a donation towards a plaque that will be applied to the picket fence that surrounds the main oval at Cricket Central.
In a salute to history, all former and current NSW Blues, Breakers, Sydney Thunder and Sydney Sixers players will have a picket dedicated in their honour and people can donate for the plaque that will sit alongside their favourite player or even for their own picket.
One former Sydney Sixers, NSW and Australian great, Brett Lee, is right behind the initiative.
“We’re giving cricket fans, clubs and businesses the opportunity to donate to Cricket New South Wales’ Foundation, which will give them a plaque put on one of these cricket pickets here at Cricket Central to show their contribution towards the game,” Lee said.
“So, you could have your name alongside the greatest cricketers ever to play the game right here on the pickets at Cricket Central.
“I think legacy is so important, especially here at Cricket New South Wales because I think about growing up and having the opportunity to leave a mark on the game.
“(But) I think about these pickets and all those amazing past players and also present players and the young boys and girls who are to come down to Cricket Central to see all these names and one day, hopefully, they might be on a picket.”
There is also a CNSW Legends category, featuring present and past greats, with plaques alongside pickets for the likes of Bradman, Trumper, Davidson, Clark, Healy and Perry all on offer via a donation auction. Lee is also one of the 27 Legends to be honoured.
Donations are tax-deductible towards the Cricket NSW Foundation and funds raised are a nod to the future - supporting our efforts to enrich communities and improve lives through cricket by enabling access to the game in NSW.
