Q: Hi Josh, is 14 years old and he has never had any coaching and hasn’t finished growing. He rips in and has a great follow through. His take off landing is a little unconventional. Josh’s dad and I have been discussing should he try and iron it out or embrace it. We’d be grateful for any guidance.

A: I agree with Wayne as Josh looks like he collapses his back leg because when his right foot lands it’s facing somewhere near mid on.
If he can straighten it somewhat towards say fine leg at his young age he’ll get more power and momentum through the crease.
He does look very promising so please look after him.

Q: What’s the best advice you can offer a young fast bowler to help them bowl faster?
A: It’s important to work out what kind of bowler you are and where you get your pace from and then train for that type of bowling.

Consider your height, weight and how strong you are.

All fast bowlers need to focus on their running including endurance and sprint training. You need to learn how to run properly so find a sprint coach to help.

To be strong is vitally important so you have to work hard on your flexibility and core strength. Find someone who can help you with fast bowler specific gym wok which could include yoga and pilates.

At training bowl as fast as you can and don’t hold back. Your endurance and pace for most than 3 or 4 overs is very important.

It’ll be hard work, so you need to be resilient. Get it right and it could be really rewarding – good luck and I hope mother nature is kind to you.
