Mitch Bromley - loved to take the game on

Langwarrin Cricket Club | June 13, 2024

Mitch Bromley played the majority of his junior and senior cricket with Langwarrin Cricket Club. He started out in the Under 11s and progressing through to the clubs Peninsula Firsts team.

Let’s find out more about Mitch journey in the game

What year you were born?

1995

Can you remember you first game of cricket?

Yep, Langwarrin under 11s. Pretty sure I got out hitting the ball straight up in the air, which I did a lot of.

Tell us briefly about your cricketing journey?

Langwarrin for around 15 years and 1 year at Cardinia Cricket Club

In which grade and at what age did you make your debut in senior cricket?

I think I was 13 filling in for the 6s and if I recall I went with Barry Coutts and we nearly got done outright.

What was the highest grade you played and can you remember what you were feeling when you were selected and how did you perform on debut?

This is actually a good story, it was 2015 and I was really nervous. It was Trav Campbell’s first game at Langwarrin. We were chasing 153. I come in at 6/99 with Simon McEvoy and we put on 55 and he finished with 83 not out and I was 19 not out. Easily one of the best knocks I have ever seen.

If you can share with our audience, how would you describe yourself as a cricketer?

Opening batter, I thought my bowling was okay but not many others did.

What were your strengths as a player?

Being able to take a game on. Really enjoyed battles with opposition.

What was your highest score in senior cricket?

When I was younger I was lucky enough to get 203 not out in the 4s against Tootgarook

What were your best bowling figures in senior cricket?

Think I got 2/10 one day against Baxter in the 2s.

Who were the best three fast bowlers you have played against?

Michael Heib- got me a few times and just struggled to pick it up

Adi Hussain- he got 12fa against us. Jake Prosser and myself had to face I think 15 overs of him so they didn’t get the outright which wasn’t much fun

Jake Wood- would never let you get easy runs. Good competitor.

Who were the best three spinners you have played against or with?

John Forrest- has great change of pace and made it very hard to get off strike

Yoey Maddege- quick spinner and makes you hurry

Matt Prosser- Have to chuck him in, played a lot of cricket with him and his work rate is amazing.

Who were the best 3 batsman you’ve played against?

Nick Jewell- Put us all over Sorrento one day and just put the ball wherever he wanted.

Simon Dart- Can win a game off his own bat. Arguably the best player to play in the MPCA in the last decade.

Scott Phillips- hits it as clean as anyone, probably could have been in the best fast bowlers also

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

Tom Hussey- T20 game against Berwick. I believe he had a big night the night before and in the first game he made nothing and then come out and hit the cleanest 80 not out I have ever seen.

Was there any bowler in particular who for whatever reason always seemed to cause you a few problems?

Dale Irving- Very fiery match and somehow I got the brunt of Dale in a bad mood. Was the quickest spell I have ever faced. I don’t think he was even trying to get me out just trying to hurt me. My good mate Nathan Volpe was down the other end and thought it was quite funny. I was also wearing right handed gloves.

Can you recall a time when you thought, wow, this is a step or two up from what you were used to?

In a game against Sorrento we got rolled for I think 50 odd in maybe 30 overs. Second innings we were 4fa not many. Me and Jake batted for 20 overs of Jake Wood and Adi and luckily we didn’t get done outright.

Who was the best wicket keeper you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

Taylor Smith- freak up the stumps. Has taken some of the best leg stumping’s I’ve seen. Also probably the best at getting into a players head.

Who are the two players you admired most in terms of skills and competitive spirit in the competitions you played?

Anthony Gapes- had many battles with him. Unfortunately he has got on top of us most of the time. He never gave his wicket away and was quite a good captain with the kids coming through Mornington.

Matt Prosser- Non biased but has been very loyal to Langwarrin and the best player in the last 2 years. I’ve never seen anyone live and breathe cricket more.

Who was the best captain/coach you had the good fortune to play with?

Craig Morrow- Probably the most I’ve learned in a season about my own game

Rob Prosser/Tim Harper- As coaches these guys taught us more than cricket

Who has been your funniest team mate?

Taylor Smith or Andy Johnson- the way they could get under players skin was great. Both great cricketers also.

Can you recall some banter or an exchange on the cricket field that still makes you laugh today?

There’s a few I can’t say on here. But was just usually me when I didn’t run a 2 or 3 and they give the ‘one to us’.

Who was your childhood hero?

Mike Hussey- absolute superstar

Who are the three sports people in the world you’d most like to meet?

Dane Swan, Connor McGregor, Cam Munster

Who’s your favourite cricket commentator?

Jack Heverin- best in the business

What was your favourite ground to play at?

Apart from Lloyd Park probably Mornington

What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket?

Indoor cricket premiership with some of the Langy boys was good fun. But any sort of flag or a team mate’s success is memorable.

What’s the best win you’ve been involved with?

Probably my debut. Wasn’t looking like we were going to win but Simon carried us over the line.

Who are the three players from your playing days at the top of the list for a Saturday afternoon barbeque?

Tom Hussey, Adam Campbell and Simon McEvoy

What are your hobbies?

At the moment I’ve just moved to Adelaide for work but it would be few beers with my mates watching some sort of sport.

?What’s the best advice you’ve received?

The faster they bowl the faster it comes off the bat.
