Belmont District Cricket Club- Presidents and First Grade Captains Report 1986/87
Belmont District Cricket Club | December 15, 2024
PRESIDENT'S REPORT
It is with pleasure that I present my report to you the members of Belmont District Cricket Club. This pleasure stems from the knowledge that the Club is in a strong position, both financially and competitively.
Once again the Club fielded teams in all competitions run under the auspices of the Newcastle District Cricket Association, and presented five semi final teams. Whilst we only snared one final win, the Fifth Grade, we were a force in all grades. On the subject of Final wins, I most heartily congratulate all the Fifth Grade players, as it is now history that both our teams played off in the Final and the trophy belongs to all of them.
Our Junior teams competed in all grades from Under 16's to Under 11's with the Under 12-2 team Major and Minor Premiers, Under 13's Minor Premiers and Under 16's Minor Premiers. At this point I would like to express appreciation on behalf of all the Club Members to the Belmont Sportsman's Club Board, Staff and Members. All play a most important part in our Club's enjoyment of excellent playing facilities and by far the cheapest cricket in town!
The efforts by the Board in providing these facilities despite difficult times in the Club industry, has not gone unnoticed by this Cricket Club. To the grounds staff, Russell and Peter, genuine thanks for again providing wickets and grounds equal to any in the district.
My thanks to the Committee for their attendance and wisdom in managing the Club through the past year, in particular my executives Greg, Graham, Allan and Garry. I have said it before but I still feel we display one of the best disciplined management committees in the area.
I cannot congratulate our major trophy winners by name as they will not be announced until after our General Meeting• In closing, may I wish our kindred bodies, Lakes United and the Belmont Baseball Club, all the best for their current seasons.
ROBERT MAYO
FIRST GRADE REPORT
CHRIS WILLIAMS: CAPTAIN
As Club Coach it has been another successful season. The Club once again produced a very good allround season with all sides performing to the Club's satisfaction. To the First XI, we almost availed ourselves another premiership, playing average cricket. If we all play to our ability in 1987/88 maybe Major and Minor Premierships could be our reward.
RUSSELL NEAL: VICE CAPTAIN
Russell performed well but not to the high standard he sets for himself.
He continually accepted the responsibility for the side's ordinary batting performances, and on many occasions this was reflected in his own batting. Next season will be better and his cricket will show this.
STEVE CLARKSON:
Steve started the season with a taste of Representative cricket and found his confidence and ability hard to control. As the year continued the experience gained earlier in the season was capitalised upon and Steve played much more responsible innings. I am pleased to hear that he is concentrating on cricket in the future and am looking forward to his inevitable success in 1987/88.
BRUCE HILLIAR:
Bruce played his typical defensive game with consistency, but when aggression was required he found it difficult to transpose his game. Toward the end of the season he started to play his cricket with a more forceful approach and these rays of attacking cricket were refreshing.
GREG HOOK:
Greg has had an even season, he has matured with experience and will find next season more enjoyable with this experience to call on. Greg is a fine cricketer and with his attitude toward the game his future at top level is assured.
TONY BRISTOW:
Tony is at point where he must consider the standard he wishes to attain and the fulfillment he can obtain from the sport. It is with reservations that I see ability not be captured. The uncertainty of a final goal and his lack of personal discipline to accept the situation at present, lead to what I feel was not an enjoyable season for Tony.
PETER SCHACHT:
Peter once again has produced a very good season, his allround performance was very pleasing. He also gained a taste of representative cricket but must continue to work and improve his cricket to gain a standard that will continually place him above his contemporaries. Peter, the more the work the greater the rewards.
CRAIG HAMILTON:
Following last season, Craig has continued to develop into a fine cricketer. He also had a very good allround season with representative honours being a reward. As for this season, continued effort will provide the results and enjoyment from the sport.
HAROLD GUIHOT:
Harold has the pace and physical fitness to develop into a good genuine fast bowler. His continued effort in this class of cricket will provid the time that must be endured to become a good fast bowler. His effort on and off the field is pleasing•
ROBERT MAYO:
Robert was asked to provide an important effort late in the season, his acceptance made my job much easier. He undertook the responsibility to bat dependant upon the game situation and accepted the team's success and personal reward. The effort he puts into the game inspires the people around him. Thanks Robert, for a job well done!
IAN HOOK:
lan played a varied season, he started as Second XI Captain and then was called to the First XI. His experience provided some lively spells in pressure situations which set the side for winning results. Ian, I am looking forward to next season with anticipation.
SID MAYO: SCORER
Sid was his typical self, QUOTE: "A THOUGHT IS A WORD TO BE SPOKEN", his continued support to myself in prematch organisation is very much appreciated.
From all the players, we look forward to your company and experience in 1987/88. THANKS!
To the "Mayo" family, i.e. Mertel, for being so patient, putting up with Sid during cricket season; and also Mertel and daughter Jan for organising afternoon tea with such proficiency. Many thanks from all the First XI.
To culminate this report, I would like to thank the committee of the Belmont District Cricket Club for another successful season.
I would also ask John Hook to accept himself and forward to his fellow Directors of the Belmont Sportsman's Club the continued support, admiration and appreciation of the facilities and organisation provided for cricket in the Belmont District.
