Belmont District Cricket Club President's Report and 1st Grade Report 1991/1992

Belmont District Cricket Club | February 19, 2025

PRESIDENTS REPORT

Once again, the past year established our club as one of the leading clubs in the district. Not only did we share the 1st grade premiership, but we also won the 2nd grade as well It has been some years since that feat occurred for us.

Additionally, all other sides were in finals contention until the last moment, which resulted in the club being pipped at the post so to speak for the club championship.

Our junior sides performed admirably in the C&S competition a fact that was not lost on Michael Whitney when he officiated at the junior presentation.

A senior club can only continue to grow in strength when it boasts the young talent we have. During the year, your committee attended to the administrative functions of running your club with a will.

I am justifiably proud of all the committee members' efforts throughout the year as it is not an easy task to operate a club of our size.

Meetings were often willing affairs, which is essential if the democratic process is to flourish. My special thanks to Russell, Peter and Ian for their assistance.

On a more sober note I must bring to your attention the difficulties in maintaining the standard of cricket we enjoy in a time of escalating costs. Inevitably, it means costs must go up to you, the player, even SO, we will still enjoy the cheapest cricket in town.

The thanks of all our club goes to the board and management of the Belmont Sportsman's Club for their continued support in the fostering of sport in Belmont. To Russell and Allan for the excellent grounds in the past year, they both go beyond the contract in their attention to our grounds.

In closing, may I wish Lakes and the Baseball club all the best for the remainder of their season and hope that together we can continue to foster our respective codes to the satisfaction of all.

ROBERT MAYO

PRESIDENT.

FIRST GRADE

I am pleased to report on the first-grade teams success of the previous season. While we did not retain the premiership, we did

manage to secure the Tom Locker Cup and a historic share in the first grade final.

The team only dropped one game throughout the season, though at an inopportune time compared with the previous season when we lost two premiership matches and a Tom Locker Cup game.

With this in mind, it is a trifle disappointing we did not manage to retain the premiership. Circumstances did not favour us in the run through the season, two games come to mind when we scored 294 vs Charlestown only to be washed out the next week, and in the latter part of the season, the possible outright result was again spoiled because of the rain.

After losing the last match of the regular round of games, the team did manage to bounce back in the semi-finals through a great team effort to chase 300 runs.

The final was to prove an anti-climax, however, as I feel we had posted a very competitive score.

Throughout the season, there were some very good performances. Of those who did all that was asked of them, Steve Moroney continued to prove what a sound player he is. With over 500 runs for the season, Steve ensured we generally got off to a sound start. The same can be said of Steve Clarkson, who, after a slow start, really put it together later in the season.

We hope Steve elects to come back in the near future because his services are certainly appreciated by this club.

Greg Charlton, Allan Sharp, and Eric Tyrrell provided a sound middle order once again, whilst Peter Schacht kept wickets ably.

Our bowling was once again spearheaded by Kevin Bray, who, after overcoming early season injuries, gained selection in the NSW and Australian Country teams performing with distinction. Neil Hook, Steve Moroney and Eric Tyrrell supported Kevin well, and David Wrixon showed he should be an integral part of next season's attack.

One player who won't be with us next year is our leading wicket taker, Chris Williams. I would have liked Chris to stay on and play next season, but he has decided to retire. Chris has been a fixture in this club since the late 70's, and having had the pleasure to have played both with him and against him it will be disappointing to see him leave the scene.

Congratulations must go to Russell Neal and his second-grade side for their achievements during the season, I look forward to the coming season, which should see some of Russell's youngsters make it more regularly into the first-grade side. There will be a couple of positions up for grabs, and good, consistent performances are what is needed to make the transition.

As a club, we are developing the strength to give the Club Championship a real shake

and that should be a priority for all involved, with last year's effort being very encouraging.

I thank all players and officials for their support and help throughout the season, and most particularly Bobby Gray, and look forward to continued success.
