The Western Suburbs District Cricket Club is saddened to hear of the passing of one of the Club’s greats, Ken Muller, an opening batsman whose career spanned fourteen consecutive seasons in first grade.
Ken passed away peacefully in Wyong Hospital last Thursday, July 20th, 2023, aged 87. A private funeral will be held on the Central Coast.
A contemporary of Alan Davidson, Bob Simpson and Wally Wellham, Ken featured in three first grade premierships: 1956-57, 1959-60 (as captain) and 1963-64.
Muller commenced his wonderful career in Wests fourth grade in the 1950-51 season, debuting as First Grade Player #380, versus Manly, on March 19th. 1955.
In all grades, he rates as Wests’ fifth highest run scorer, accumulating 7,271 runs, including seven centuries with a highest score of 127.
Muller scored 5,835 runs in first grade at 32.41, placing him fourth on the all-time club first grade run-scorers, behind Peter Burkhart, Bob Simpson AO and Tom Brown.
Ken was a handy change bowler, taking 62 wickets across his grade career at the economical average of 22.06.
Muller captain NSW Second Elevens and NSW Colts at various times and earned selection in the strong NSW lineup in the 1960-61 season. However, Ken was named as twelfth man in the State side versus Western Australia and unfortunately not selected for the Blues again.
WSDCC mourns the passing of a well-respected Player who contributed so much to a golden era of the Magpies.
