Western Suburbs v University of NSW 3rd Grade - Round 2 NSW Premier Cricket 2023-24

Western Suburbs and UNSW 3rd Grade played the 2nd round of the NSW Premier Cricket season at Blick Oval on Saturday 7 October 2023.

UNSW were sent into bat and were off to a brisk start with their captain Gavin Ho scoring 22 off 18 balls before he was judged LBW in the fourth over off Dean Jones with the score 1 for 27.

UNSW lost 4 further wickets to be 5 for 54 when a terrific 119 run partnership between Arunav Duggal and Abishek Mohanaraj put the pressure back on Western Suburbs.

Both Arunav and Abishek played very well with Arunav being more aggressive and Abishek playing a supporting role before accelerating towards the back end of his innings.

Arunav scored 82 runs off 96 balls with 8 fours and 3 sixes.

Abishek hit 4 fours and 3 sixes on his way to 71 off 128 balls. He was the 8th batter dismissed with the score on 205 and UNSW finished their 50 overs 9 for 215.

The best of the bowlers for Western Suburbs were Zain Shamsi who bowled 10 overs 3 for 27. Zain’s first spell of 6 overs reaped 3 wickets for only 8 runs.

Dean Jones took 2 for 39 off his 7 overs.

In reply Western Suburbs lost Blaize McKee early and then were 2 for 35 when Rohin Patel was given out caught behind down leg side for 18 and the score was 2 for 35.

Zan Shamsi and Josh Low McMahon playing against his former club put on 69 for the 3rd wicket before Josh was out for 46. Josh was particularly aggressive scoring a run a ball and his 6 fours and 1 six. Score 3 for 104.

Captain Paul Ryan joined Zain Shamsi and together they put on 77 runs before Ryan was run out for 39. 4 for 181.

Zain Shamsi 57 not out off 134 balls and Will O’Donnell not out 14 off 21 balls together steered Western Suburbs home as they finished 4 for 216 off 46.2 overs.

Shamsi innings included 2 boundaries and he kept the innings together with a patient and solid innings. It was great to see Zain not out when the winning runs were scored.

Mitchell Law was the pick of the bowlers for UNSW with 2 for 31 off 8 overs.

Umpires Saif Siddiqui and Ram Srinivasan were excellent and managed the game very well.
