Pocket Profile: Campbell Kean - Western Suburbs District Cricket Club

Campbell Kean is an exciting young wicketkeeper-batsman for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club who has already captained the AW Green Shield side and played finals cricket in his two seasons at the club.

Last season, Campbell recorded 33 dismissals, including 28 catches, as well as taking 5 dismissals against Randwick Petersham in Round 4.

Campbell also won the Bill Russell Award for his fielding efforts in his first season at Western Suburbs, which is based on an accumulation of points voted by players at the end of each round.

What year were you born?

2007

Tell us about your cricket journey. Where did you start junior cricket and the clubs you’ve played for in senior cricket?

I began my cricket career for the Glenmore Park Redbacks. I then played my rep cricket for Penrith, along with one season of grade cricket, before moving to Wests.

If you can share with our readers how you would describe yourself as a cricketer? Batsman, bowler, allrounder, wicket keeper etc 

I am a wicketkeeper who bats in the middle order


What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

I love the friendships developed through cricket and enjoying summers with blokes with the same passion and love for the game.

What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket so far?

My most memorable moment in cricket has probably been taking a hat trick. The adrenaline and emotions when I got that third wicket was unbelievable, and being able to hold onto that is unforgettable.

What’s been your favourite dismissal as a wicketkeeper so far? The dismissal that makes you smile when you reflect.

My favourite dismissal was against Randwick Petersham last year, where I took a one-handed diving catch to the right when we were pushing for an outright late in the day.

 Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand, playing with or against? 

The best innings I’ve seen was playing against North Shore in Reps, where Will Adlam scored 90 off about 30 balls and was just hitting them wherever he wanted to. 

Who are the two players you’ve come to admire most in your club in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

Ben Gorham and Rohin Patel

What are the two attributes you like to see in a captain and leader?

Two attributes I like to see in a captain are trust and courage. Trust is an important attribute for a captain as they need to have trust in their players to do their job and the players need to have trust in their captain to make the right call. Courage is an important attribute for a captain and leader as they need to be adventurous with their decisions and be willing to take the game on.

Favourite location, city or country as a holiday destination?

Nice, France

Who’s been the biggest influence on your career so far?

My Dad has been the biggest influence on my cricket career. He is always willing to go down the nets with me and pushes me to always do my best.

Where do you find inspiration that gets you through challenging times?

I find inspiration during challenging times by going back to what makes me happy and to what I’m proud of accomplishing.

Who are the three people in the world you’d love to meet and talk to?

Adam Gilchrist, Robin Van Persie and Usain Bolt


What do you like to do to relax outside cricket?

I love to play golf and AFL

Hard work beats talent; when talent doesn’t work hard

What are your goals for the next season?

To win a competition

Can we ask, what would it mean to you to play first class cricket?

To play first-class cricket would be unbelievable. It would be a surreal experience to play at such a high level and, to be able to play with and against players of that quality and to know that all the hard work I’ve put into my game have paid off.
