Pocket Profile: Luke Hoogendyk - Western Suburbs District Cricket Club

Luke Hoogendyk is a promising up-and-coming wicketkeeper-batsman for Western Suburbs District Cricket Club.

Last season, Luke took 35 dismissals for the club, consisting of 23 catches, 6 stumpings and 6 runouts.

He also scored his maiden grade fifty for the club, with a matchwinning-knock of 52 not out against Sydney University in Round 5, and was also a part of the Western Suburbs AW Green Shield side, which made the quarterfinals.

What year were you born?

2008

Tell us about your cricket journey. Where did you start junior cricket and the clubs you’ve played for in senior cricket?

I started my cricket journey playing at Moorebank Mustangs and Saint Christophers for club cricket and played reps at Fairfield Liverpool and Bankstown.

If you can share with our readers how you would describe yourself as a cricketer? 

I’m a wicketkeeper-batsman who bats through the top and middle order. 


What do you enjoy most about playing cricket?

What I enjoy the most about playing cricket is how much cricket has developed the qualities of hard work, determination, team and club spirit in me. I love how unpredictable cricket is with a combination of individual and team skills that make every game unique.

What’s been your most memorable moment in cricket so far?

Scoring a 52* in my first grade season at Wests

Who is the best spinner you’ve played against?

Aarush Soni

Who is the best spinner you’ve kept wicket to?

James Barwise and Rehaan Shyamsundar

What’s been your favourite dismissal as a wicketkeeper so far? The dismissal that makes you smile when you reflect. 

My favourite dismissal was against Randwick Petersham, where I took a leg side full stretch diving catch one-handed.

Who played the best innings you’ve seen firsthand, playing with or against? 

The best innings I’ve had the joy of watching was William Zakostelsky where he scored 87 off 105 balls against UNSW.

Who is the best wicketkeeper you’ve had the good fortune to play with? 

I haven’t played with any keepers, but I have the privilege to train with and learn from Oliver Hing.

Who are the two players you’ve come to admire most in your club in terms of skills and competitive spirit?

Josh Clarke and Jack Bermingham

What are the two attributes you like to see in a captain and leader?

Two attributes I like to see in a captain and leader is where they have trust in their players to get the job done and inspire the team for better success.

Which singer/band would you like to see perform live?

Drake


Favourite location, city or country as a holiday destination?

The Greek Islands

Who’s been the biggest influence on your career so far? 

My Mum and Dad. My mum dedicates her time to taking me to my training and encourages me to believe in myself. My Dad always takes me to the nets and constantly pushs me past my limits to have greater success in cricket. 

Where do you find inspiration that gets you through challenging times?

How I find my inspiration to get past my challenging times is to analyse my mistakes and then learn from them. Staying positive is a key factor in how you are able to perform and not dwell on the things that didn’t go to plan.

What do you like to do to relax outside cricket?

Play golf with my mates

For me to play first-class cricket would be an amazing opportunity as I would feel accomplished that all my hard work and dedication to cricket has paid off
