question
Q: Brabourne Stadium, Bombay, 18th Dec 1967. My cousin invited me to see the last day of the Test Match - India v/s West Indies. Over 35,000 people. Electric atmosphere. I was mesmerised. HOOKED. Hopelessly. It was Clive Lloyd's Test debut. I also got to see Gary Sobers, Basil Butcher, Seymour Nurse, Wes Hall. The Indian team also had some great stars: Chandrasekhar, Ajit Wadekar, Chandu Borde, Salim Durrani, M.L. Jaisimha. I had hardly played some street cricket before then, but after that I did not stop playing for over 45 years in India, England, Australia and have watched Tests in another 4 countries.
I am NOT a tragic. I am a VICTIM of cricket.

Q: As a batter runs are your currency and it’s great to see Ryan Hackney follow up his maiden first class century for NSW by scoring big runs for his club Parramatta in NSW Premier Cricket.
In the month of March, Ryan has scored.
• 50 and 51 not for Parramatta v Mosman
• 73 for Parramatta v Sutherland
• 99 and 15 for NSW 2nd XI v ACT
• 78 and 102 for NSW v South Australia
• 51 for Parramatta in their quarter final against St George
• 130 for Parramatta in their semi-final against Randwick Petersham
• 193 not for Parramatta in the Grand Final against Sydney University.
On the back of this form, and his ability to occupy the crease and bat long into an innings, one can only assume Ryan will get the opportunity to start next season opening the batting for NSW.
Well played Ryan Hackney.

A: Hackney is "the goods" as per his Coach, Neil D'Costa.
Incidentally, name an Australian Coach in modern times who has produced more batsmen than D'Costa?
Michael Clarke, Phil Hughes, Marnus Labhuchagne being the most prominent of them.
And, he has got another handful, ripening, up his sleeve.
Put me down as a fanboy.

Q: If you have a right arm off spinner bowling to a right hand batsman is it better to have a close in fielder on the leg side or offside and what are the determining factors?
A: Though I was a leg-spinner, I ALWAYS wanted a short extra-cover AND a short mid-wicket. I imagine if I was bowling offies, that would not change, as batsmen beaten in the air or mistiming a drive would be caught. Also, to save a single off a defensive push.

Q: Does the captain of a cricket team have to be the best player in the team?
A: Not necessarily, though it definitely helps.
Generally, through history, the best players in the team have not been the best captains. Arguably, inspirational captains such as Ian Chappell, Mike Brearley, Richie Benaud, Mark Taylor, Steve Waugh, Stephen Fleming etc have not been the best players of the sides they led.
Great captains have a certain 'X' factor, just like great players do. However, it's ingredients are clearly different - as revealed when captaincy is thrust upon them. I can think of Gary Sobers, Virat Kohli, Ricky Ponting, Freddie Flintoff etc who were their team's best players but, may be not, great captains.

A: A N Y shot that helps you easily get off strike, until the time you want to be on strike!
