Martin Haywood - Randwick Petersham Cricket Club - Heroes of the Ages
Randwick Petersham Cricket Club | June 12, 2023
Martin Haywood joined Randwick in 1993-94 from Campbelltown. A powerful right-hand stroke maker who hit the ball hard and often had already debuted for NSW in 1991-92.
Marty had quite a spectacular first season with Randwick. He scored 53 in his first game against St George at Coogee to get him away to a season which netted 845 runs–798 at 72.55 in Belvidere Cup matches and 47 in the Reschs Cup Limited Overs competition which Randwick won.
Against Petersham-Marrickville at Petersham Oval he and captain Andrew Millican put on 321 for the third wicket with Marty making an amazing 203* and Andrew finishing with 107* and was the highest partnership ever recorded for Randwick for any wicket, it was just five runs behind the SCA record of 326 for the third wicket established by Mark O’Neill (200*) and Phil Emery (127*) in 1986-87 against Fairfield.
This innings included a record performance. Facing the 18th over from former NSW off-spinner Wayne Mulherin, Haywood launched into his six deliveries hitting each one over the long-on and mid-wicket fence for six! His score went from 167* to 203* in the over–36 runs coming off it. SCA records showed that it was the most runs hit off a single over since Sid Barnes took 40 off an eight-ball over plus a no-ball in the 1936-37 season.
Just two days prior to his record six-hitting innings against Petersham-Marrickville, Haywood was recalled to the NSW Sheffield Shield team for its clash with South Australia at the SCG. He was one of three players Randwick fielded in the successful NSW team in the Sheffield Shield final, the others being Rod Davison and Richard Chee Quee. The three were also involved in winning the Limited Overs Mercantile Mutual Cup in what was an outstanding season for NSW. Interestingly, when recalled to the side, Marty replaced Adam Gilchrist who was named 12th man.
In a 1st Grade career with three clubs he amassed a total of 10,035 runs and in his two seasons with Randwick he scored a total of 1,311 runs with five centuries including his famous double hundred.
