Rodney Davison - Randwick Petersham Cricket Club - Heroes of the Ages

Randwick Petersham Cricket Club | July 18, 2023

Rodney Davison joined Randwick in 1991-92 having hit 700 runs the previous season with Sutherland. It was somewhat of a conservative start for the young opening batsman hitting four half-centuries in a total of 490. However, net season his name was planted firmly in the minds of State selectors when he rattled up 702 runs for the season including scores of 150* and 135* in the first two rounds playing Petersham-Marrickville and NDs. Those scores were followed up by four half-centuries before he unfortunately broke a finger and missed a couple of games. After four rounds he was averaging 227.50 in a total of 455. In the newly introduced one-day Resch’s Cup competition he hit sensational 106* v Penrith.

In such devastating form, it was no surprise that he joined the State Squad prior to the 1993-94. In November 1993 he debuted v Tas at the SCG after forcing the selector’s hands with two centuries for Randwick and a huge 255* for the NSW 2nd XI. In the second innings he made his mark batting through the innings with 133*

Rodney finished his initial first-class season with 482 runs at 48.2 with one century and three fifties. But strangely, his success with the bat was not in the spotlight, rather It was his outstanding fielding at short leg. The same season Randwick won the Resch’s Cup and with Rodney scoring 290 runs at 72.50. His top score of 110* v Waverley was his fourth ton for the summer finishing with the magnificent total of 1,024.

Unfortunately for Randwick, 1994-95 was Rodney’s last season with the club. In 4 seasons he scored 2,927 runs with nine centuries at 54.20 for each of his 54 completed innings. To average more than 730 runs a season in four consecutive summers of cricket emphasised the quality of Rodney Davison as a batsman of immense talent. He also continued to do well with NSW and when his first-class career came to an end in 2000, he had amassed 2,300 runs at an average of 35.38 with four centuries and 11 fifties.

When he retired at the end of 2005-06 he had scored 16,954 runs with 44 centuries in club cricket.
