Randwick Petersham defeat Penrith and Western Suburbs on T20 Saturday

Randwick Petersham Cricket Club | October 01, 2023

By Lyall Gardner

In another scintillating display of power batting, Randwick Petersham today cemented its place at the top of the Pool A ladder in the 1st Grade Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 Cup competition at Coogee Oval. Two matches were played and the home team ran out convincing winners in each. Highlights were the outstanding 101 not out from Jack Wood in the match against Western Suburbs while skipper Jason Sangha hit a majestic 68 not out playing Penrith after being dropped on the boundary before he had scored.

In the first match, the Panthers made 7-136 from their 20 overs with Riley Ayre (2-19 off 4 overs) and Jason Ralston (2-27 off 3), the principal wicket-takers. In reply, Anthony Sams with 46 off 36 balls hitting 4 fours and a 6 and Sangha, whose 68* came from just 49 balls with 4 boundaries and 4 big tonks over the fence, put on 108 for the second wicket. The winning runs came up in just 17 overs.

In the afternoon game, Wests were away to a flyer with Joshua Clarke smashing everything dished up to him to remain 83 not out from 48 balls in a healthy score of 7-178 at the end of the mandatory 20 overs. In the run-chase, Sams and Wood got stuck in from the get-go and had 69 on the board from the first 5 overs. When Sams was caught for 47 off 35 with 4 fours and a six, the pair had put on 133 in just 11 overs. Wood was 75 at that stage and continued on his merry way to get to 100 off only 48 balls with 5 fours and 9 massive sixes. Long-termers claimed that one of his sixes which was last seen heading towards McDonald’s opposite Coogee Beach, was one of the biggest-ever hits at the ground. He finished with 101 off 50 balls when the winning runs were scored after18 overs. Jack’s first 50 came up off just 21 balls and included 3 fours and 4 sixes.

Anthony Sams also made his mark during the day by becoming the club’s highest scorer in Twenty 20 cricket. He overtook Adam Semple’s 1,200 runs record to end the day with 1,292.

Having won all 4 games, Randwick Petersham now progresses to the Quarter Finals on Sunday 15 October. The team’s opponent will be determined next Sunday through the Elimination Finals.

The season began for lower grades today with 3rd and 5th grades winning their matches against Bankstown while 2nds went down on the last ball of the day. 4ths looked a big chance having the Bulldogs 7-106 chasing 187, but an unconquered 82 runs partnership spoilt their party. The stars of the day were two debutants in NSW Premier Cricket with Jake Egan (who took a hat-trick in under 21 Poidevin-Gray last Sunday) making 100* off 114 balls with 3 fours and 6 sixes while Lachlan Skelly took 5 successive wickets to finish with 5-37 off 10 overs.
