Randwick Petersham v Hawkesbury - Round 3 of the 2023-24 NSW Premier Cricket season.

Randwick Petersham Cricket Club | October 16, 2023

By Lyall Gardner

Another brilliant win last Saturday for Randwick Petersham taking on Hawkesbury in a 1st Grade limited overs match at Benson’s Lane, Richmond. The side won by 58 runs bowling out the Hawks for 168 in reply to its 9-226 off 50 overs. The Hawks’ bowling subdued the visitors’ batting to some extent, with top-score coming from number 7 bat Angus McTaggart, making 55 off 66 balls while hitting 6 fours. Earlier, skipper Riley Ayre had set the scene with a solid 50 off 87 balls with just 2 boundaries. Alex Ross, in his second Belvidere Cup match, made a valuable 41 off 56 balls. Former Australian left-arm spinner, Steve O’Keeffe ensured runs were hard to come by, taking 4-34 off 10 overs.

In the run chase, the locals made a reasonable start to be 2-61 off 15 overs before losing 3-19. From 5-102, the Randy Petes bowlers really hit their straps taking the last 5 wickets for only 66 runs to pocket the points. Fast bowler Jason Ralston returned best figures with 4-19 off 9 overs while spinner Ryan Ninan took 3-31 off 10.

It was in fact a huge day for the club with all 5 grades winning. It is the 19th time we have achieved that feat and the second occasion playing Hawkesbury. Among the top performances, Reuben Sachs hit a brilliant 127 not out off 102 balls with 10 fours and 4 sixes in 3rd Grade while teammate Lachlan Skelly took 6-31 off 10 overs to complete the job. It was his second “five-for” in his first three matches for the club. And to add to the good news, Randwick Petersham Gold won its Metropolitan Cup match against University of NSW. Randwick Petersham Green was the only casualty during the day going down by just 4 runs against Penrith.

Kingsgrove T20 Semi Final – Randwick Petersham v UNSW

Randwick Petersham today won its way into the 1st Grade semi-final of the Kingsgrove Sports Twenty20 competition with a decisive victory over University of NSW at Coogee Oval. Winning the toss and batting first, University recorded its lowest score against Randwick Petersham in a Twenty20 match. Off 18.2 overs, the students were bowled out for just 75. Their previous lowest score against the club was 87 in 2019-20. Chief destroyer was fast bowler Jason Ralston who ended with 5-17 off his allotted 4 overs. Introduced into the attack in the 5th over, he took a wicket first ball and another 5 balls later to have 2-1. Deep square leg fielder Alex Ross took catches off both batters. Two balls into his next over he had Uni. skipper and former Randy Pete, Brandon McLean (who was a member our two T20 competition wins in 2011-12 and 2013-14) caught by Ben Mitchell to give him 3-1 off 8 balls. Brought back into the attack in the 13th over, he took wickets with his second and sixth balls to have the remarkable figures of 5-4 from 18 balls! The score was 8-50 and although he had 13 taken off his final over to end with 5-17, the innings was soon wrapped up for a low 75. Angus McTaggart shared the bowling honours with 2-17 (4) while Alex Ross held four outfield catches. Ralston’s performance was very close to the club record of 5-14 established by Riley Ayre, ironically also against Uni. of NSW, in 2019-20.

In the run chase, it was 0-21 off 3 overs then 5 balls later it was 3-22, with Anthony Sams, Jack Wood (12) and Alex Ross, a first ball duck, all back in the pavilion. Dan Sams and Riley Ayre settled things down and took the score to 4-51 when Sams was bowled for 14 off 20 balls. Ben Mitchell then joined Ayre and quickly put the issue beyond doubt by belting top-score of 22* off 19 balls with 2 sixes (one of which was lost in Alfreda Street) to bring up the target of 76 in 16 overs. Skipper Riley Ayre remained unconquered on 16* off 33 balls.

Randwick Petersham now enters its 8th semi-final in the 15 years of this competition (we won 7). It appears we will play Fairfield-Liverpool (who defeated Sydney University today) in two weeks’ time–SUNDAY 28 October 2023.

With wins in all 5 grades yesterday against Hawkesbury and a Metro Cup win, this has been one of the club’s greatest weekend performances. It is all very likely that when the Club Championship points table is released in the next few days, Randwick Petersham will be on top.
