Petersham-Marrickville Cricket Club win Poidevin-Gray competition for second time - 1961-62
Randwick Petersham Cricket Club | December 13, 2024
Led by Graham Howlett, Petersham-Marrickville won the 1961-62 under 21 years Poidevin-Gray competition for the second time in 11 years. The side contained many players who would form the nucleus of the club’s future 1st XI. Contrary to the team’s form the previous season when it failed to win a match, in a major turnaround, it won four of the five rounds to head the Southern Division with almost the same side.
Alan Staunton was the star with the bat hitting 209 runs with 94 in just 106 minutes against Cumberland his top score. Stuart Gardner hit the next best score with 81 against University. But it was Colin Hollingsworth who was the real hero with a brilliant all-round performance in the Grand Final against Balmain at North Sydney

In the Grand Final against Balmain at North Sydney Oval, Petersham-Marrickville batted first on a difficult wicket, slumping to 6-84 by lunch against an attack containing future Australian Test fast bowler, Dave Renneberg. After the break however, it was Hollingsworth (52*) and spin bowler John Longmuir (31), who got together in posting a competitive 9-202. And it was the 18-year-old Hollingsworth, returning an amazing 8-22, to have the Tigers out for a well-beaten 81 and take the Shield.
Hollingsworth completed the competition with 29 wickets at an average of just 11 runs each. This was a new club record breaking the previous mark of 20 wickets taken by Pat Crawford in 1951-52. Another feature of Hollingsworth’s performance was that he was a product of the Saturday Morning Coaching Classes having joined when he was just nine.
