First Grade Player No.295 - Warwick Hayes

St George Cricket Club | October 31, 2024

After recently celebrating 60 magnificent years, it is only appropriate that we acknowledge one of the great stalwarts of our club - Warwick "The ROCKDOG" Hayes !

A local junior who started his amazing career with Kogarah Boys in the St George junior competition, Warwick went on to become the all time highest runscorer for the club throughout all grades with 16871 runs including 1352 in First Grade. His Grade career with St George commenced in the season of 1979-80 and he had his final game in 2020-21.

"Waz" had a highest Score of 215 in which was achieved in 2nd Grade back in 1990-91 and still stands as the record for the highest score in that grade. He finished with 25 centuries throughout the grades.

He amazingly won his only Grade competition in First Grade 2008-09 at the age of 44.

Returning back to captaining the lower grades Warwick became a proficient off spinner and eventually finished with 110 grade wickets.

Warwick was made a life member of the Sydney Cricket Association and is also St George DCC life member No. 38 which he received in 2000. In 2023 he was added to the St George DCC Hall Of Fame which is located at the Norm O'Neill Cricket Training Facility. After retirement from St George, he continued to play cricket where he represented NSW and Australia in the Over 50's.

Off the field, "The Rockdog" was also a member of the notoriously "in"famous Club band "Oldplay" formally known as the "Brian Saunders Experience" with teammates Greg Matchett and Hamish Solomons.

Outside of cricket Warwick Hayes is a Doctor of Environmental Science and a much loved and successful football referee.
