Arthur Morris - A man for doubles

The 28th of December marked 84 years since Arthur Morris became the first of only three players to score a century in both innings of a first club debut. Playing for New South Wales against Queensland, Morris scored 148 in the first innings and followed it up with 111 in the 2nd innings.

He then became the tenth player in Test history to achieve the same milestone in a test match. Playing at the Adelaide Oval against England in 1947 Arthur Morris scored 122 in the first innings and followed it up with 124* in the 2nd innings. Amazingly Denis Compton achieved the same feat in the same test match when he scored 147 and 103*. This was the first instance of two players scoring centuries in both innings of the same test match. 27 years later Greg and Ian Chappell would be the next to achieve the feat and are the only brothers to have done so. His St George, NSW and Australian team mate, Sir Donald Bradman, achieved the feat in 1948 against India in Melbourne thus becoming the 3rd Australian to do so behind Warren Bardsley (1909) and Morris (1947).

Morris didn't mind a double century on occasion. His highest score for St George was 201*. He also had a first class highest score of 290 and 206 in Test Cricket.

For St George in First Grade he had 113 innings and scored 4541 runs at an average of 45.4

It's no small wonder he was included in the Australian team of the century back in 2000.
