Vale John Martin

St George Cricket Club | February 21, 2023

It is with great sadness that we advise of the passing of John Martin. St George DCC, its players and members extend to his wife Nancy and their three sons and families our heartfelt condolences at this difficult time.

John was 1st grade player Number 206, having graduated through the ranks from Green Shield (1956/57 and 1957/58), Poidevin Gray and through each of the grades. With a strongly built frame and a natural athleticism he powered to the crease delivering outswingers at genuine pace. A quiet, gentle man off the field John on crossing the boundary line was not afraid to intimidate batsmen with his speed and a ferocious short ball. His first-grade career, starting in 1962/63 saw him capture 403 wickets at 18.44 as he led the attack in 4 premiership successes. An outstanding slip fieldsman late in his career, with large hands and long reach, he regularly reminded his captains that they should have recognised this talent earlier.

John was elevated to the Sheffield Shield squad where he had some success. His most notable scalps being Greg Chappell twice and English opener Colin Milburn.

John’s St George career finished in 1974 when he took a job opportunity in MacKay, Queensland ultimately becoming the City Engineer. He stayed in regular contact with his contemporaries and attended the Club’s Centenary Celebrations in 2010. Unfortunately, recent years were restricted by poor health.

In 2021 John was elevated to the Club’s Hall of Fame, joining Ray Tozer and Kerry O’Keeffe as the representatives from the 1960s. Ill health precluded his attendance but when contacted he was humbled by the recognition and indeed emotional.

Cricket is a game dominated by statistics; John Martin’s are outstanding. However, in a team sport the important judgement criteria is provided by your teammates and opponents. John Martin was highly respected by all those with whom he played. He was recognised as a tough, team orientated player who always gave of his best often when hampered by injury. Those who shared the Hurstville Oval changeroom with John to a man laud his ability but more importantly his friendship. St George has lost one of its best.
