question
Q: Sutherland District Cricket Club - 4th Grade Premiers in inaugural season 1965-66

In the Club’s first season 1965-66, the youthful 4th Grade team, well led by experienced off-spinner Ross Longbottom, won the premiership in an incredible final at Sutherland Oval. The star of the final was 15-year-old pace bowler Paul Lennon, who took 9-19 off 10.3 overs, as Central Cumberland were routed for just 43. Sutherland replied with 6/67 before the match was called off with Sutherland premiers. It was a fourth consecutive 4th Grade premiership for 46-year-old Longbottom, who had captained St.George to premierships in 1962-63, 1963-64 & 1964-65.

Q: In the winter of 2015, Daniel Rixon broke his thumb playing Aussie Rules for St.George. As a result, he missed the start of the 2015-16 season as he waited for the injury to recover. In order to prove his fitness to resume in 1st Grade, he came back through 2nd Grade in Round 6 vs Hawkesbury at Owen Earle Oval. At the time, he had played 261 matches for Sutherland, including 221 in 1sts, with a highest score of 95, made in 1sts the previous season.

He certainly proved that he had fully recovered from his thumb injury, opening the batting and smashing a club record score for 2nd Grade with 272 off 248 balls

Q: Sam Konstas has completed a remarkable double in the current Sheffield Shield match against South Australia at Cricket Central. After recording his maiden first class century in the first innings with 152 (241 balls, 13 fours & 4 sixes), he scored his second century for the match in the second innings. In scoring 105 (225 balls, 7 fours & 1 six) at the age of 19 years 8 days, he became the youngest Australian player since Ricky Ponting to score a century in each innings of a Sheffield Shield match. Ponting did it at the age of 18 years 85 days in 1992-93. The only other player younger than Sam to score a century in each innings of a Sheffield Shield match was Archie Jackson, aged 18 years 124 days, in 1927-28. One other Australian player has scored a century in each innings of any first class match – Arthur Morris at the age of 18 years 344 days in his first class debut in 1940-41.

Sam has now scored 22 centuries in Sheffield Shield, Australian & NSW Under 19 matches and Premier Cricket. This includes centuries in 1st to 5th Grades, 1st Grade Limited Overs, Poidevin-Gray Shield & AW Green Shield – believed to be the only player to have achieved this feat.

It is with a very heavy heart that I write these words from the other side of the world. It is now over 10 months since we were advised of Jules’ diagnosis, which we passed on to the SDCC community at that time. Q: Shane Watson played a quite extraordinary innings at Allan Border Oval in the Sixers Conference T20 semi-final today. Chasing Mosman’s 8/150 off 20 overs, Sutherland cruised to victory with 22 balls to spare, as they made 2/156 off 16.2 overs. Shane spearheaded the run-chase with 114 not out off 53 balls, with a remarkable 16 sixes and one four – 100 runs in boundaries. He shared a first wicket partnership of 149 with Jarryd Biviano, who was unluckily out for 36 off 35 balls with only two runs needed for victory. Shane hit the first ball of the innings for four and was 4 runs off his first 7 balls. He then scored 110 runs off his next 46 balls, including the 16 sixes, meaning he averaged a six every three balls!

On 3 February 1968, the “B” Shires team played Ryde at Sutherland Oval in a one-day match. Captain Max Silva won the toss and sent Ryde in to bat. Young tearaway pace bowler Paul McCann was making his debut for the club and had a strong southerly at his back. It is with great regret that we advise that Alan Griffiths, 1st Grade player #40, passed away on 5th December 2023 after a battle with cancer. He was aged 75. Alan played six seasons for the Club, being a foundation player in 1965-66. He played 97 matches between 1965-66 and 1970-71, scoring 3071 runs at an average of 24.2, with four centuries. He also took 69 catches. In first grade, he scored 820 runs in 31 matches at an average of 21.0, with a highest score of 102. He was a member of the 4th Grade premiership team in 1967-68 and the 1st Grade Rothmans Limited Overs Knockout premiership team in 1969-70. Some comments in annual reports about Alan included:
1965-66 “B” Shires (6th Grade):
“Outstanding features of the season’s play included the aggressive right-handed batting of Alan Griffiths, who scored 392 runs” (including his highest score for the Club of 146no).
1967-68 4th Grade:
“Alan Griffiths’ aggregate of 431 runs was a fitting reward for consistent batting, while his energy and anticipation in the field saved many runs.”
1968-69 3rd Grade:
“Alan Griffiths, who scored a fine century, showed much improved technique and earned promotion.”
1969-70 1st Grade:
“Opener Alan Griffiths showed determination of high order and was a most consistent runmaker in his first season in the major grade. He was also an inspiration in the field with superb exhibitions at times.”
Alan was an outstanding sportsman. He finished his career with SDCC at the age of 22 to pursue his soccer career. He played for Sutherland and then Marconi in the National Soccer League. His three sons, Adam, Joel & Ryan, all played for the Socceroos.
We extend our sincere condolences to his wife Leonie, his sons Adam, Joel & Ryan and daughter Ranae, and their families.

question
Q: David Niu joined Sutherland Districted Cricket Club from St George and made his first grade debut for the club on 29 September 1984. He is the proud owner of first grade playing number 125.

An all-round cricket with immense talent David had represented NSW Under 16s and 19s. He was a tremendously gifted rugby union and league player and for many years David’s contribution to sport especially in the USA in significant.

Who was the best wicket keeper you’ve seen firsthand playing with or against?

Andrew Millican was our wicket keeper through all our junior and state age grade teams. We were St George team mates until Green Shield, when David Moore got the nod, and Spike ended up going to Randwick. Both were great glovemen. I think Spike had the edge with the bat and the odd cheeky comment from behind the stumps. Dave went on to play for NSW.

Phil Jaques - there’s not a bloke who worked harder or put in the hours Jaquesy did and still does with his coaching.
