Best 1st grade limited overs bowling figures in grade cricket history

Sutherland District Cricket Club | August 23, 2024

On 19 October 1975, Sutherland played Central Cumberland at Old King’s Oval in Round 1 of the Rothman’s Limited Overs Knockout competition. The star of the show was opening bowler Bryan Gorman, who took 235 wickets in 112 1st Grade matches and 399 wickets in all grades from 166 matches for the Club.

Sutherland captain Ian Napper won the toss and elected to bat. With future Test players Andrew Hilditch and John Dyson leading the way, Sutherland posted 6/201 off their 40 8-ball overs. Hilditch top-scored with 87, including 13 fours, while Dyson made 46 with 5 fours. Former Australian rugby league fullback Les Johns chipped in late with 32 not out, including 2 sixes & 2 fours.

Bryan Gorman then struck immediately, taking two wickets in his first over. Howard Reus picked up a wicket in his second over to have Cumberland reeling at 3/24. Gorman then decimated the middle order in his third over, taking a hat-trick to have 5-11 off three overs, with Cumberland on 6/27 off 5 overs! Reus took his second wicket in the next over, followed by another to Gorman in his fourth over to have the score on 8/35. Some late hitting only delayed the inevitable as Gorman picked up the final two wickets to finish with the amazing figures of 8-29 off 6.1 overs and Cumberland were all out for 62 off 12.1 overs. Bryan Gorman’s 8-29 has never been bettered in the 57-year history of Sydney Limited Overs competitions.
