Devlin Malone makes history
Sutherland District Cricket Club | October 05, 2024
17-year-old leg-spinner Devlin Malone created Sutherland DCC history today (Sat 31 Oct 2015) by taking all 10 wickets in an innings in 2nd Grade. Last Saturday on day one of the match at Glenn McGrath Oval against Sydney University, Devlin took 6-23 off 9.2 overs as Uni were dismissed for 88. Sutherland replied with 181 and had Uni 2/48 at stumps in their second innings. Malone had both wickets, finishing the day with 2-8 off 3 overs. With spinner Riley Ayre being 12th man for the Cricket Australia XI playing New Zealand at Blacktown International Sportspark, Devlin was due to replace Riley in 1st Grade today. However, following the abandonment of the match at Blacktown, Riley stayed in 1sts and Devlin stayed at GMO. Ironically, Devlin would not have set foot on the field at 1st Grade as we batted all day to finish on 7/235 in our second innings.
The first session in 2nd Grade today didn't give a sign of what was to come, with Uni 2/165 at lunch. Devlin had two spells – 0-26 off 6 overs and 0-22 off 5 overs. He came on just after lunch and took a wicket in his second over after the break. The wickets then just kept falling as he took 8-59 off 15 overs to finish with 10-115 off 29 overs. He had two bowled, two leg before wicket, one caught by the keeper, two caught at slip and three caught in the infield.
There had been nine previous instances of 9 wickets in an innings in Sutherland's history – Paul Lennon 9-19 (4th Grade final 65-66), Ted Cotton 9-24 (1sts 68-69), Jack Slattery 9-66 (1sts 70-71), Paul McCann 9-45 (3rds 70-71), Grahame Barry 9-82 (1sts 81-82), Graham McBarron 9-88 (3rds 81-82), Matthew Brennan 9-32 (4ths 88-89), Grant Geraghty 9-43 (5ths 89-90) & Nathan Fitzgerald 9-102 (1sts 14-15).
Devlin's match figures of 16-138 are also a club record. The previous best match figures for the Club were 15-40 by Geoff Glover in "B" Shires in 67-68 and 15-79 by Paul McCann in 2nds in 68-69.
