On Saturday 10 March 2007, Jason Young drew down the curtain on a fine cricket career. Hailing from Wagga Wagga, Jason played for NSW Under 17s in 1986-87 & 1987-88 before joining the St.George Club in 1988-89. He played for NSW Under 19s in 1988-89 & 1989-90 and was selected in the Australian Under 19 team to play England Under 19s in 1989-90. He also toured the West Indies with Australian Under 19s at the end of the 1989-90 season. His teammates in the Australian Under 19 team included Michael Bevan, Damien Fleming, Brendon Julian, Damien Martyn and Shane Warne. In one of the matches against the England team, Jason scored 134 against an attack that included Darren Gough.

In 1990-91, Jason attended the Australian Cricket Academy in Adelaide and played first grade for Prospect in the Adelaide competition. At the end of that season, he toured Sri Lanka with the Cricket Academy. The Academy team included Greg Blewett, Justin Langer, Stuart MacGill and Michael Slater and their opponents included Marvan Atapattu and Muttiah Muralitharan.

Returning to Sydney for the 1991-92 season, Jason joined the University of NSW club, where he played for five seasons. In 1994-95, he played two matches for NSW in the Sheffield Shield. He then joined Sutherland in 1996-97, captaining the First Grade Limited Overs team to the final in that first season. In 1997-98, he took over as First Grade captain and led Sutherland to its second First Grade premiership. The next season, the team again made the finals but were eliminated in the qualifying final. In all, Jason captained Sutherland's First Grade team 76 times. He also played in the First Grade Limited Overs premiership team in 2002-03 and the semi-final team in 2005-06.

In Round 6 of the current season, Jason reached the milestone of 10,000 runs in first grade cricket (Sydney and Adelaide). After his final match, he had scored 6,530 runs at an average of 35.29 for Sutherland in 188 matches (11 seasons) and 10,197 runs at an average of 37.49 in 286 matches in all first grade cricket.
