Pat Burns takes a double hat-trick and a hat-trick in the same season

Sutherland District Cricket Club | December 24, 2024

In 2013-14, pace bowler Pat Burns split his season between 2nds & 3rds. In 2nds, he played 8 matches and took 7 wickets at 41.1. However, he also played 8 matches in 3rds, where his figures were much more respectable – 8 matches for 29 wickets at an average of 11.8. This included two remarkable bowling performances:

Round 4 vs Randwick Petersham at Sutherland Oval

Randwick Petersham won the toss and batted. Pat Burns opened the bowling and took 1-2 off the first over, which also included a leg-bye. After the second over from skipper Josh Zywietz, the score was 1/7. The first ball of Pat’s second over went for four byes (1/11), followed by a dot ball. Then the fireworks started:

             2.3       A.Coles             b Pat Burns                                                 1

             2.4       T.Holland         ct w/k Mark Andersson b Pat Burns 0

             2.5       B.Stares            lbw b Pat Burns                                         0

             2.6       M.Hilder          b Pat Burns                                                 0

The score was now 5/11! Four wickets in four balls – a double hat-trick!! A first in Sutherland DCC’s history! Pat went on to take two more wickets late in the innings to finish with 7-32 off 15 overs.

After dismissing Randwick Petersham for 117, Sutherland scored 5/118 by stumps and declared before play on day 2. In their second innings, Randwick Petersham fared little better, being all out for 130, with Josh Zywietz (4-31) and Trent Smith (3-12) the leading wicket-takers. Sutherland chased down the target for outright victory of 130 in 90 minutes for a dominant win:

Qualifying Final vs Sydney University at University No.2

Sutherland won the toss and sent Sydney Uni in to bat. After 37 overs, Uni were on 4/106. Pat Burns bowled the 38th over and was hit for four first ball, followed by three dot balls. The last two balls were:

             37.5     H.Clark              ct w/k Mark Andersson b Pat Burns   21

             37.6     C.Cull                b Pat Burns                                                  0

Uni were now 6/110. The 39th over went for three runs to take the score to 6/113. Pat then started the 40th over:

             39.1     J.Maddocks     lbw b Pat Burns                                         21

Another hat-trick!! The next three balls were dot balls and then:

             39.5     H.Watt               b Pat Burns                                                   0

Uni were 8/113 and Pat had taken four wickets in seven balls!! He finished with 5-39 off 14 overs. Uni were all out for 125, but they bounced back to dismiss Sutherland for only 116 – a first innings lead of nine. At stumps on day one, Uni were 0/43 and Sutherland had it all to do the next day if they were to advance to the semi-final – as the lower-placed team, they now had to win outright.

Sutherland eventually dismissed Uni for 239, with Pat taking 2-55 to finish a fine season in 3rds. Sutherland needed 249 for the outright win, but fell short by 44 runs – the end to a remarkable season for Pat Burns (who was the last wicket to fall):
