Shane Watson and Jarryd Biviano put on first 300-run partnership in 1st Grade for Sutherland

Sutherland District Cricket Club | January 23, 2025

After returning from the Caribbean Premier League at the end of August 2017, Shane Watson indicated to the Club that he would like to start the 2017-18 season with Sutherland to keep in practice for the BBL competition that would start in December. After making a golden duck in Round 1 at Campbelltown, he bounced back in Round 2 versus St.George at Glenn McGrath Oval.

St.George won the toss and sent Sutherland in to bat. Trent Copeland had captain Chris Williams caught behind off the fourth ball of the match for a duck – 1/1. Shane Watson joined Jarryd Biviano at the crease and they batted for the next 50 overs before Jarryd was dismissed off the first ball of the 51st over with the score on 301. Jarryd was out for 122 off 161 balls, with 13 fours & 4 sixes.

Shane was out shortly after for 184 off 151 balls. He brought up his milestones as follows:

             52 runs – 6 fours & 3 sixes

             100 runs – 12 fours & 4 sixes

             151 runs – 15 fours & 9 sixes

             184 runs – 16 fours & 11 sixes

The partnership of 300 runs was scored off 299 balls, in 212 minutes. It was the highest partnership for any wicket in 1st Grade for Sutherland (and still is), surpassing the previous record of 285 (also for the second wicket) set by Nic Maddinson & Matthew Hughston in the 2009-10 semi-final versus Eastern Suburbs.

The innings finished on 8/427 off 86.5 overs. On the second day, St.George were dismissed for 274, giving Sutherland a first innings win by 153 runs.
