Nic Maddinson's outstanding all-round performance in 1st Grade semi-final

Sutherland District Cricket Club | January 31, 2025

In 2009-10, Sutherland finished the preliminary rounds in 1st Grade as minor premiers by 16 points and played Sydney University in the qualifying final. Sutherland won a close match after scoring 387 (Matthew Hughston 184, Phil Jaques 80, Andre Adams 75) and then dismissing Uni for 334 (Andre Adams 3-71). Second-placed Eastern Suburbs lost their qualifying final and so had to face Sutherland in the semi-final at Glenn McGrath Oval.

Skipper Matthew Hughston won the toss and chose to bat. Openers Phil Jaques and Nic Maddinson put on 91 before Jaques was dismissed for 55. Hughston joined Maddinson and there was no more joy for the rest of day one for the Easts bowlers as they put on 285 for the second wicket. At the time, it was the highest partnership for any wicket in any grade for the Club, surpassing by one run the previous best set earlier in the season in 2nd Grade by David Murphy and Scott Pickering.

Maddinson was out early on day two for 137 off 275 balls in 366 minutes, with 18 fours & one six. His partnership with Hughston of 285 was scored in 281 minutes, off 445 balls. Hughston went on to make 166 off 245 balls in 293 minutes, with 24 fours & 4 sixes. Some big hitting by Joel Tuccia late in the order saw him finish on 54 not out off 47 balls, with 5 fours & 3 sixes, as the total reached 472.

Sutherland then dismissed Easts for 258 for a comprehensive victory. Nic Maddinson was the best of the bowlers with 5-95 to become the youngest player in Sydney first grade history to score a century and take five wickets in an innings in the same match, aged 18 years 96 days. The previous record-holder was Shane Lee, who was 19 years 46 days.
