Kyle Brockley and Jake Wilson break two 1st Grade partnership records in the space of five rounds

Sutherland District Cricket Club | February 24, 2025

In Round 7 of the 2016-17 season, Sutherland played Bankstown at Glenn McGrath Oval. Bankstown won the toss and sent Sutherland in to bat, a decision that was vindicated when Sutherland slumped to 9/88 in the 31st over when Jamie Brown was dismissed right on the scheduled lunch break at 12.30pm. This meant that the innings was extended for up to half an hour and number 11 batsman Jake Wilson joined number 10 Kyle Brockley at the crease. Kyle was 4 not out. After half an hour’s play, the score had advanced to 9/110 off 39 overs, so lunch was taken at 1.00pm.

Play resumed at 1.40pm and the partnership continued on. With a previous highest score in 1st Grade of 34, Kyle brought up his maiden half-century with a six. On and on they went, until the scheduled time for the tea break of 3.10pm was reached. By this stage, the score had moved on to 9/202 off 67 overs. Again play was extended for up to 30 minutes. Kyle was eventually dismissed at 3.21pm for 71 (153 minutes, 131 balls, 13 fours & 1 six), while Jake was not out on 42 (131 minutes, 133 balls, 5 fours & 1 six). The score was 207, so the 10th wicket partnership had put on 119, breaking the Sutherland 1st Grade record of 81 set by Daniel Rixon and Chad Gilmour in 2010-11.

In Round 11, Sutherland ventures to Old Kings Oval to play Parramatta. Parramatta won the toss and Sutherland were once again sent in to bat. Skipper Chris Williams held the innings together, scoring 85 before he was the 8th man out 14 minutes after tea, with the score on 189 in the 68th over. Kyle Brockley was not out on 9 and was joined by Jake Wilson, both players having moved up one spot in the batting order after their record partnership in Round 7. Once again, the two batsmen set about frustrating the bowling attack, batting for the rest of the day to take the score to 8/318 off 96 overs. Kyle had reached 91 with one over left to be bowled for the day. He scored twos of each of the first four balls of the over and then took a single off the fifth ball to bring up a maiden 1st Grade century. He finished the day on 100 not out off 85 balls in 123 minutes, with 10 fours and 4 sixes. Jake was not out on 33 and the partnership was worth 129.

On day two, Sutherland batted on and Kyle was bowled off the second ball of the day, without adding to his score. Thus, the partnership finished on 129 – another Sutherland 1st Grade record, this time for the 9th wicket. The previous record had stood since 1969-70, when Les Ritchie and Brian Stephen put on 103 against Bankstown in an innings when Les scored the fastest century in terms of minutes batted in the Club’s history. Jake was out shortly after for 38 (122 minutes, 101 balls, 4 fours). Both partnership records still stand – a rare feat for the same batsmen to hold both the 9th and 10th wicket partnership records in the same grade!
