Sutherland DCC first entered teams in the Sydney women’s grade cricket competition in 1989-90, after we were approached by some parents to take the local women’s teams under our banner. We started with teams in 2nd, 3rd & 4th Grades and over the next 12 seasons, we entered teams variously at different times in all grades from 1st to 4th Grade plus Brewer Shield (Under 17). Those teams won premierships in 1994-95 (Brewer), 1997-98 (4ths), 1998-99 (4ths), 1999-00 (3rds), 2000-01 (2nds & 3rds) and 2001-02 (2nds).

After the 2001-02 season, the Sutherland women’s teams amalgamated with the St.George Brewer Shield team to form St.George-Sutherland Women’s Cricket Club (with initial assistance from the two men’s clubs). St.George had won the Brewer Shield in the 2000-01 & 2001-02 seasons (they also won 3rds in 1987-88).

Over the next 22 seasons, the amalgamated club achieved considerable success. They won the Club Championship ten times, in three consecutive seasons from 2004-05 to 2006-07, then in five consecutive seasons from 2009-10 to 2013-14, then in 2017-18 and 2019-20. In individual competitions, they won competitions as follows:

2002-03 – 2nds

2004-05 – 2nds

2005-06 – 3rds

2006-07 – 1sts/2nds T20, 2nds & 3rds

2007-08 – 2nds & 3rds

2008-09 – 2nds

2009-10 – 2nds & 3rds

2010-11 – 2nds, 2nds T20, 3rds, 3rds T20 & Brewer Shield

2011-12 – 2nds, 2nds T20, 3rds & 3rds T20

2012-13 – 2nds, 2nds T20, 3rds & 3rds T20

2013-14 – 1sts T20, 2nds, 2nds T20, 3rds & 3rds T20

2014-15 – 2nds T20 & 3rds

2015-16 – 2nds, 2nds T20, 3rds & 3rds T20

2016-17 – 2nds, 3rds & 3rds T20

2017-18 – 3rds T20

2018-19 – 3rds T20

2019-20 – 3rds & 3rds T20

2021-22 – 3rds & Brewer Shield

2022-23 – 3rds

That is a total of one 1st Grade T20, one 1sts/2nds T20, 12 2nd Grade, six 2nd Grade T20, 14 3rd Grade, nine 3rd Grade T20 and two Brewer Shield premierships – 45 premierships in all.

However, the biggest prize of all, the Ruth Preddy Trophy for the 1st Grade Premiership, had eluded the club. They made the final six times, in 2008-09, 2010-11, 2011-12, 2013-14, 2017-18 and 2023-24, only to fall at the final hurdle each time.

Well, on Sunday 16th March at Cricket NSW headquarters at Cricket Central (Silverwater), that finally changed and St.George-Sutherland WCC won their maiden 1st Grade Premiership – their 46th premiership in their 23rd season!

Winning the toss and batting, the Slayers made 9/197 off their 50 overs, with Lucy Finn making 72 (104 balls) and Tahlia Wilson capping a fine season at representative & club levels with 52 (69 balls). They then dismissed Campbelltown-Camden for 172 off 45.1 overs, after they were 3/101 off 18.4 overs with two batters well set. The Slayers took 7-71 off 26.3 overs of superb finals pressure cricket.

The wicket-takers were Juliette Morton 3-39 (10 overs), Lucy Finn 2-18 (6.1), Jaclyn Vickery 2-42 (10), Abby Burrows 2-43 (10) & Rhiannon Dick 1-24 (7), while wicket-keeper Tahlia Wilson had 2 catches & 2 stumpings. Other members of the final team were Cailyn Mozar (captain), Ella Briscoe, Jo Kelly, Lucia Martin, Coco Streets and Lucy Western. The team was coached by Jake Wilson. Lucy Finn was named Player of the Match.
