Sutherland DCC Poidevin-Gray Shield Premiers 2021-22

The 2021-22 Poidevin-Gray Shield competition had a reduced program due to the late start to the season as a result of the COVID pandemic. There were five preliminary rounds, each T20 matches played as part of T20 doubleheaders with 1st Grade, followed by the finals series which were 50-over matches. Sutherland won three and had two washed out in their five preliminary round matches. The Round 3 match against North Sydney had a remarkable finish:

Round 1

Sutherland 6/161 cc (Dylan Holdstock 49, Callum Barton 36, Kobe Ross 31) d. Eastern Suburbs 8/123 off 20 overs (Will Straker 3-24, Justin Green 2-24).

Round 2

Washed out vs Mosman.

Round 3

Sutherland 3/141 cc (Callum Barton 81no, Kobe Ross 24, Dylan Holdstock 21) d. North Sydney 117 off 19.5 overs (Andrew Ritchie 4-14 incl hat-trick, Justin Green 2-13, Ronak Bedi 2-21, Will Straker 2-26).

With two overs left in their innings, North Sydney were 5/107. Will Straker bowled the 19th over and the first five balls were 2 . . 2 6, before Will bowled the batsman with the last ball of the over. Andrew Ritchie then bowled the last over, which proceeded as follows:

Round 5

Gordon 9/88 cc (Zac Philipson 3-9, Will Straker 2-11, Andrew Ritchie 2-12) lost to Sutherland 1/89 off 10.2 overs (Callum Barton 47, Justin Green 22no).

The finals series resulted in three convincing wins for the Sutherland side:

 

Conference semi-final

Sutherland 197 off 49.1 overs (Kobe Ross 72, Lachlan Ball 25, Justin Green 25) d. Eastern Suburbs 150 off 40.2 overs (Will Straker 3-26, Kieran Weatherall 2-26, Ronak Bedi 2-43).

Conference final

University of NSW 183 off 47.5 overs (Kieran Weatherall 4-24, Andrew Ritchie 2-33, Will Straker 2-34, Lachlan Ball 6ct) lost to Sutherland 3/184 off 28.3 overs (Callum Barton 56, Justin Green 44no, Dylan Holdstock 34no, Koby Ross 30).

 

This was our 7th win in the Poidevin-Gray Shield. Only St.George (16) & Northern District (8) have won the competition more times. In the 60 years that we have been in the competition, the most P-G wins have been 8 by St.George, then 7 by Northern District & Sutherland.
