Vale Brian Ferguson 1943-2023
NSW Cricket Umpires and Scorers Association | December 14, 2023
NSWCUSA mourns the passing of long-serving member Brian Ferguson.
Passionate about cricket and umpiring, Brian was always available to umpire and willing to share his vast experience and knowledge to benefit less experienced colleagues. So many members over the years can say they enjoyed a day umpiring with and learning from Brian Ferguson. He was a popular and respected figure in the Sydney Cricket Association (SCA) for more than 25 years. Brian was also in more recent times a committed and respected member of the Sydney Shires Cricket Umpires’ Association.
Brian joined NSWCUSA in October 1997. He served the Association on both the Examination Board and Social Committee. Brian also served a term as a Board Director.
He made a significant contribution as an umpire standing in 409 SCA matches, 151 of which were in men’s premier cricket first grade. Brian also umpired 34 matches in the Shires competition. He was a regular umpiring in the AW Green Shield competition over the years where he loved to witness and encourage young players as they progressed through the pathway to premier cricket.
Brian played first-grade rugby at the Manly club, he was a talented outside back and later volunteered as ground manager with both West Harbour and Warringah. He was a loved and respected figure around the Sydney club rugby scene.
Brian was aged 80 and is survived by his devoted and caring wife Sandra, his two children Belinda and Kylie, and their families. He adored them all, being a very proud and committed family man. For several months Sandra has been supporting Brian through illness in what was a remarkable display of love, loyalty, service, and commitment. Our thoughts and prayers at this time are with Sandra, Belinda and Kylie, and their families.
While as a cricket community, we mourn Brian’s passing today, it also provides an opportunity to remember and celebrate a life fully lived. Brian loved life, he had a wonderful sense of humour, and he loved his family and his involvement in sports. Both sports, cricket and rugby, are far richer for his valued contribution. Brian Ferguson did a lot of good for other people.
To live in the hearts of others is never to die. Brian will live in the hearts of many he touched, remembered fondly and sadly missed.
